Classes will open Tuesday, Aug. 28, for 602 full-time students at Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor.
The number represents a 2-percent increase from last year’s full-time enrollment, and the largest class of full-time students to date at the technical college, according to enrollment officials.
About 200 first- and second-year students moved into the two dormitories on campus Sunday. For the first time in five years, the dorms were reported full with a waiting list for occupancy.
Student demographics are changing at the technical college. The percentage of older students, part-time students and students with previous college experience is the highest ever, according to enrollment officials.
Nathaniel J. Crowley Jr., acting president, termed the 1990-91 academic year a time of growth and change for the technical college.
A search has been reopened for a campus president, following the resignation of L. Steve Thornburg this spring. The college is completing a comprehensive plan which projects the college’s growth in the next four decades. A new student advising system has been started this year to increase the campus retention rate.
Fifty-four campus faculty members arrived Aug. 23 to participate in a two-day symposium. New instructors this year are Marilyn Lavelle, head of the nursing department; Darlynne Willette, nursing instructor, and Charles Veilleux, refrigeration and air conditioning instructor.
