George Lizotte’s condition upgraded to `fair’

The condition of a Medway man who allegedly shot a 5-year-old boy and then shot himself on Interstate 95 in Bangor has been upgraded to fair, according to a spokesman at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

George Lizotte, 49, has been hospitalized since Thursday, Aug. 9, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was in serious condition until Monday when he was upgraded to fair.

According to a hospital press release, fair condition means that “vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.”

According to George Lizotte’s daughter, Jean Lizotte of East Millinocket, George Lizotte is breathing on his own and he can open his eyes.

“He’s got his eyes open and we put a TV in front of him and it looks like sometimes he watches it but it’s pretty hard to tell,” she said.

She said her father has not spoken to anyone and she said she is not sure that he will ever speak again.

“He has a tube in his stomach so they can feed him,” she said.

He has lost the hearing in one ear and doctors are unsure of the hearing in the other one, Jean Lizotte said.

“Since we don’t know if he can hear or not we’ve been holding up signs, but he still doesn’t respond. They call it fair (condition). I don’t call it too good,” she said.

George Lizotte allegedly kidnapped Victor Lizotte at gunpoint from the Department of Human Services in Bangor.

He was being followed by a Bangor police officer on Interstate 95 when he suddenly stopped the car. Police surrounded the car and about an hour later they approached the car and found the boy dead and Lizotte bleeding from the head.

Police have not pressed charges against Lizotte but have said that they are monitoring his condition. Neither Jeff Hjelm of the Attorney General’s Office nor Brian Cox of the Bangor Police Department could be reached for comment on Monday.
