Brewer police are investigating a burglary that occurred Sunday at the Weathervane Restaurant on Wilson Street.
The burglary was similar to three burglaries at Weathervane Restaurants in New York and New Hampshire, according to Cpl. David Clewley of the Brewer Police Department.
Between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday someone kicked in a door to the restaurant and stole a safe, said Clewley.
Clewley said the burglars broke into the alarm box and cut the alarm wires and telephone wires to the business.
The stolen safe contained only business receipts, but the burglars stole a small amount of cash that was in a petty-cash box in a desk drawer, he said.
During the last month, Weathervanes in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., East Greenbush, N.Y., and Concord, N.H., have been burglarized.
The burglars got $8,000 to $10,000 in cash from each of those breaks, Clewley said. In Brewer the company had taken steps to prevent such large cash losses.
Clewley said the Brewer Police Department would be working with police in New York and New Hampshire to try and solve the case.
“We have suspects and will be working in conjunction with other agencies to try and solve it,” he said.
The only other Weathervane Restaurant in Maine is located in Waterville and that restaurant has not been burglarized, Clewley said.
