OWLS HEAD — Charles Chiarchiaro, director of the Owls Head Transportation Museum, was operating a used-car lot on Monday as calls kept coming in from prospective purchasers of some of the vehicles that went unsold in the annual auction Sunday. About half of the 230 consigned vehicles were sold, netting the museum $52,500 in commissions.
The museum collects a maximum $5,000 on any car sold, with 10 percent collected on vehicles that fail to reach the maximum. Other sales during the day boosted the museum coffers to $82,500, Chiarchiaro said. The auction is the museum’s largest fund-raiser, with receipts going into endowments.
The highest-priced vehicle sold at the auction was a 1931 Packard Phaeton that went for $130,000. The least expensive was a pile of rust rescued recently from a Maine barn that was identified as a 1927 Reo truck. The successful purchaser bought the truck for $75 and then donated it to the museum.
On Monday, Chiarchiaro was attempting to link buyers with sellers in order to boost the commissions.
Total sales Monday morning were $927,500, with more sales expected later in the day.
