THOMASTON — Police say excessive speed may have contributed to the death of a 21-year-old Union man in a one-car accident Tuesday night near the Rockland-Thomaston town line. Police identified the victim as Todd A. Richardson.

Richardson was alone in a 1988 Ford Escort apparently headed toward Rockland on the West Meadow Road when the car struck a tree and rolled over, police said.

Police and rescue personnel from Rockland and Thomaston responded to the scene. Damage to the sedan was so extensive that it took rescue personnel about 90 minutes to remove the victim from the car. The accident occurred about 8:55 p.m.

State police reconstructed the accident Wednesday.
