Maine Street ’90 festival on Saturday

AUGUSTA — The successes of Maine Street ’90 communities will be celebrated in an afternoon of music, dance, song, and colorful exhibits from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Capitol Park.

The picnic-style Maine Street ’90 Celebration in the Park will honor those involved in the celebration of community pride that has generated hundreds of projects and events in nearly 300 towns and cities. Maine people have organized activities that focus on rediscovering the past, assessing community achievements and taking active measures to build a strong future, according to Maine Street ’90 officials.

Maine Street ’90 volunteers from all 16 counties are invited to the celebration, and a special display area will be set up to show each county’s outstanding Maine Street ’90 activities. Posters, photo-montages, and actual examples of Maine Street ’90 projects will be featured at the display.

The best native and regional artists and performers will be featured at the celebration, including singers, dancers, musicians, vaudevillians, and acrobats.

No food concessions will be available in the park but water will be supplied. Opening ceremonies will be held at 12:30 p.m. with Gov. John McKernan, Augusta Mayor Bill Burney, and Maine Street ’90 Chairman John Menario.
