Mothers Against Drunk Driving already has made a name for itself in Maine with vigorous and effective lobbying for tougher OUI laws. Tomorrow, MADD will conduct a one-day campaign to see if it can make a difference in the Labor Day weekend death toll.
The objective is laudable and the method is simple: MADD is asking motorists to pledge to refrain from drinking tomorrow, Saturday, the first day of the three-day holiday and to burn their headlights as a signal of support. With help from Volkswagen of America, MADD is promoting the program nationally as Drive for Life Day.
Given the statistical probability that 63 people will die tomorrow on U.S. roads because some motorists will choose to drink and drive, every travelers’ chances of survival are enhanced if the project is successful.
For those who refrain from mixing beer and booze with driving, and who choose to burn their lights to remind fellow motorists of their decision: Thanks.
For those who take the pledge, but who choose not to advertise it, that’s fine too. It’s the sober decision that counts. It will be a sensible beginning to a long weekend. An annual event that should turn into a daily practice.
