IP schedules forestry day

NEW SHARON — International Paper Co. will hold its annual Forestry Field Day for pulpwood suppliers and participants in its Landowner Assistance Program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Perry Lamb’s tree farm in New Sharon.

A chicken barbecue will be served at noon, after which Joseph Edwards, superintendent of insurance, will be featured speaker. He will discuss the Workers’ Compensation system, its impact on the logging industry and on business relationships between landowners and loggers.

The field day is designed to express appreciation to the company’s pulpwood suppliers and landowners who participate in its Landowner Assistance Program. International Paper is a major consumer of pulpwood in the area and has operated the assistance program since 1976 to provide technical forestry assistance to landowners in areas where wood is provided to the company’s Androscoggin mill.

“The program is aimed at helping landowners derive income from land while maintaining its productivity through sound forest-management practices,” said David Griswold, supervisor of logging and fiber supply for the company. More than 350 landowners holding 70,000 acres participate in the program.
