Joe Turner Cantu of Houston, Texas, has been named as the new director of the Penobscot Theater in Bangor. Cantu, who is a playwright as well, has been associate artistic director of Stages Theater in Houston since 1986.
Cantu was chosen from a field of 65 applicants from across the country. He will arrive in Bangor Sept. 12.
“We were impressed with his creativity and intense dedication,” said Penobscot Theater board member Rolf Olsen, who added that Cantu had “focus and certainty.”
A public Bon Voyage Celebration will be held for departing director George Vafiadis from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Pilots Grill in Bangor. The cost is $10. Reservations may be made by telephoning the Penobscot Theater at 942-3333.
