BRIDGETON — A 17-year-old New York boy was in critical condition Friday night after being shot in the head by a friend at a camp on Highland Lake, Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

David Burnhard was standing on a dock beside the lake Friday afternoon when a 16-year-old male friend, whose name has not been released, shot him once in the head with a .357-caliber Magnum, said McCausland.

The 16-year-old was standing on the shore when he shot Burnhard, McCausland said, adding that police had not determined whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

A 15-year-old boy was also at the camp when the shooting occurred, McCausland said.

All three teen-agers are from the New York City area and were staying at a campsite owned by Gary Brutman, McCausland said, adding that no adults were present at the time of the incident.

No charges have been filed, McCausland said.

Burnhard was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
