ALFRED — A man who was trying to flag down a van while standing in the middle of the road was struck by the vehicle and killed early Saturday, police said.

Michael J. Desveaux, 24, of Sanford, was struck on a dark section of U.S. Route 202 at about 1 a.m., the York County Sheriff’s Department said. He was pronounced dead at a Sanford hospital.

The driver of the van, Maurice Labbe, 26, of Biddeford, told police that the victim was standing in the center of the road trying to flag down the vehicle when the accident occurred. No charges were filed Saturday and the case remained under investigation, police said.
