Traveling across country in a Model T Ford may not seem like life in the fast lane, but to those who have experienced it, nothing else quite compares. Ambling along at speeds of 25-30 miles per hour, one is able to take in all the scenery, read the mail boxes, and even exchange a brief word or two with pedestrians before passing out of earshot. In a modern fast-paced world, reliving the days of early motoring provides a pleasant pause, according to dozens of Model T owners who annually participate in the “Mainely T Tour.”
Established by John and Ida Anderson of Temple, the event is held annually the weekend after Labor Day at various locations around the state. In the past, fans have come from as far as Florida and Wisconsin to participate.
This year’s tour is being held in Belfast, with scheduled activities to include a ride on the Belfast and Moosehead railway, complete with an old-fashioned train robbery; a ferry trip to Islesboro; and a 1920’s style catered lawn party featuring live music of the era.
“It’s the highlight of my entire year,” says Percy Hyde of Bowdoinham.
Of the 15 million Model T’s built between 1909 and 1927, it is estimated that one million are still in operation. More than 35 of the vehicles are expected to participate this weekend.
