Psychiatric-nursing program set at UMA

AUGUSTA — Registered nurses interested in psychiatric nursing may obtain certificates in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Maine at Augusta.

Coordinated by the Division of Nursing Education at UMA, the certificate provides education beyond basic levels and allows registered nurses to receive formal recognition for advanced education.

Eleanor Cushman, chairman of the Division of Nursing, said that registered nurses now practicing or those wishing to practice in a psychiatric mental health setting may enhance professional development through the program.

The 27-hour program will help nurses wishing to apply for American Nursing Association certification and many of the courses apply toward a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Cushman said there was no advanced training in Maine in psychiatric nursing but there was heavy demand for practioners. More information may be had at 622-7131.
