PORTLAND — S. Kirk Studstrup has been named to replace Deputy Chief District Court Judge Susan W. Calkins.

Calkins, who will replace Judge Alan C. Pease when he retires as chief judge Oct. 31, appointed Studstrup, an at-large judge.

The appointment of the deputy chief judge is with the advice and consent of the chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. The appointee is among Maine District Court judges.

The deputy chief judge assists the chief judge with administrative duties and has all of the duties, powers and responsibilities of the chief judge in that jurist’s absence.

Studstrup was appointed to the Maine District Court by former Gov. Joseph E. Brennan in October 1985. He served as a member of the State Workers’ Compensation Commission from 1983 to 1985 and was an administrative assistant to Brennan from 1979 to 1983. Prior to that, he was an assistant attorney general.

Studstrup is a graduate of Duke University and George Washington University Law School. He lives in Hallowell with his wife, Elizabeth Wells, and their son, Mark.
