Channel 2 to focus on breast cancer

NewsCenter’s Diane Atwood and Jill MacDonald will examine breast cancer and early detection methods on “The Tenth Woman,” airing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, on WLBZ-TV, Channel 2, Bangor, and WCSH-TV, Channel 6 in Portland.

The program will announce a month-long mammography screening for Maine women older than 40. The screening is sponsored by 6 Alive! WLBZ-TV, the Maine Division of the American Cancer Association, and the Maine Breast Cancer Control Project.

MacDonald and Suzanne Lemieux, director of the Women’s Center at St. Joseph Hospital, will report from the mammogram center with a demonstration of mammograms and the proper method for the all-important breast self-examination.

A discussion will focus on licensing of mammogram facilities and state mandates for insurance companies to reimburse costs of such screening — in light of the fact that women do not have mammograms done when they should.

From Channel 6 in Portland, Atwood will speak with Dr. Lani Graham, director of the Bureau of Health, and patient Pat Angelone. The audience will be invited to call in questions about the topic.
