Less than three months after being hired as news director of WLBZ Channel 2, Paul Reece has resigned.

“We’ve agreed that I’m not the right person,” said Reece, who started as news director June 30 and resigned Wednesday.

Margo Cobb, general manager at Channel 2, declined to comment.

“I am not prepared to make a statement,” said Cobb. “We will make a prepared statement in a few days.”

Reece, who has 25 years’ experience in the television news business, came to Channel 2 after working as news director for the non-profit Southern European Network in Vicenza, Italy. Before that, Reece said he worked mainly in large TV markets, such as Washington, D.C., and Boston.

“Things are done here in a very laid-back manner. The emphasis is on camaraderie, rather than business and productivity,” said Reece. “My approach to management was not consistent with the patterns that were in place.”

Reece, who estimated he has reported six or eight news stories on the air, said he was focusing on getting the newsroom organized and that the amount of air time was not an issue in his departure.

“There are no hard feelings. They have a credible and effective news operation for a market this size,” he said.
