BAXTER STATE PARK — An Owls Head woman was treated for hypothermia at Millinocket Regional Hospital after she spent Wednesday night on Mount Katahdin’s Knife Edge.
Helen Ciaravino, 74, was treated for exposure and was released from the hospital on Thursday, according to Joe Roach, administrator.
According to Anthony Ciaravino, her brother-in-law, Helen Ciaravino wanted to climb the mountain as she neared her 75th birthday on Sept. 25.
Ciaravino and her husband, Casper, told relatives that they planned to remain overnight at a campsite Tuesday on the west side of the mountain.
On Wednesday, Helen climbed to Knife Edge alone, while her husband drove to the east side of the mountain to meet her on her return trip down the mountain.
When Helen failed to return, her husband notified Baxter State Park Authorities.
