ELLSWORTH — Bangor Daily News carrier Ezra M. Niesen, 16, of Ellsworth, was listed in fair condition Sunday at Eastern Maine Medical Center where he was taken after being struck by a car as he delivered Saturday’s paper.

The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. as Niesen crossed Route 1A near the Full Gospel Church, according to Officer Tommy E. Jordan of the Ellsworth Police Department. The teen-ager was struck by a 1990 Pontiac driven by Shawn J. Gervais, 22, of New Brunswick, Canada.

According to witness accounts, Gervais did not have a chance to stop in time to avoid hitting Niesen, the officer said.

Slow-moving traffic in the northbound lane may have blocked Niesen’s full view of Gervais’ southbound car, Jordan said. Niesen crossed the road from east to west.

Niesen suffered a fractured arm, leg and ankle as well as head injuries, Jordan reported. The teen-ager was transported to the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Bangor hospital.

Gervais was not injured in the accident. The accident caused $800 damage to the hood and windshield of the car.
