A Pennsylvania couple traveling to Orono for a jewelry show were injured early Monday when their car rolled over on Interstate 95 near the Coldbrook Road exit.
Hilda Levin, 59, was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center for a broken nose she received in the 6 a.m. crash, according to state Trooper Barry Curtis, and was released. Her 60-year-old husband, Kenneth, received head lacerations and complained of chest pain, and was admitted to EMMC. A hospital spokeswoman said he was listed in fair condition Monday evening.
Curtis speculated that Hilda Levin dozed off at the wheel — which he said she denied — and awakened to find that the car had drifted to the right. Curtis said she then may have meant to apply the brakes, but hit the accelerator instead.
The 1986 Mitsubishi went over the embankment, struck a tree and flipped over. The car was demolished, said Curtis.
According to the trooper, the Levins run Poconos Mountain Jewelers in Mount Poconos, Pa., and were on their way to the University of Maine, where they were to participate in a jewelry show.
Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, said Curtis.
