Bates upsets Amherst; Bowdoin wins

Bowdoin and Bates opened their 1990 football seasons with victories Saturday, but the University of Lowell ended Maine Maritime Academy’s unbeaten season to highlight small college football action over the weekend in Maine.

Lowell socked MMA 30-8, Bowdoin edged Middlebury College 21-19, and Bates upset Amherst College 13-6.

Elsewhere in Maine small college action, Trinity beat Colby 48-13.

Bowdoin 21, Middlebury 19

At Brunswick, Jim Carenzo kicked a 26-yard field goal with 12 seconds to go, giving Bowdoin a squeaker over Middlebury in the season opener for both teams.

Bowdoin’s Eric LaPlaca started the winning drive after Middlebury had taken a 19-18 lead with 1:43 to play when quarterback Pat Dyson capped an 82-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown dive.

LaPlaca took the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to the Bowdoin 49, from where quarterback Mike Kirch began a 36-yard drive that set up the winning kick. Jim LeClair ran 17 yards to keep the winning drive alive. ! Bowdoin opened the scoring when Anthony Schena tackled Dyson in the end zone for a safety. LeClair’s 1-yard touchdown run widened the Polar Bear lead to 9-0 by halftime.

Carenzo connected on a 32-yard field goal to give Bowdoin a 12-0 lead at the beginning of the third quarter.

Greg Fisher’s touchdown reception with 4:54 to go put Middlebury on the board.

Andy Hyland ran 20 yards for Middlebury’s second touchdown and Eric Bachman’s extra point made it 13-12 Middlebury after three quarters.

Bowdoin retook the lead 18-13 on Kirch’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Loren Stead with 11:52 left in the game.

Bates 13, Amherst 6

At Amherst, Mass., Steve Bucci completed 5 of 13 passes, including a 30-yard touchdown to Ike Stewart, and scored on a 1-yard plunge as Bates defeated Amherst in another NESCAC game.

Bates (1-0) intercepted four Amherst passes and recovered a fumble, while turning the ball over only once on a fumble. Tom Yuskis ran for 71 yards for Bates.

Tailback Craig Goguen ran for 141 yards on 30 carries and scored the only touchdown for Amherst (0-1) as Bates led 7-6 at the half.

Lowell 30, MMA 8

At Saco, Brian Gauthier scored three touchdowns and rushed for 125 yards as the Chiefs beat the Mariners in New England Football Conference play at Thornton Academy’s Hill Stadium.

Both teams took 2-0 records into the NEFC Northern Division showdown.

Dennis Anselmo’s field goal, a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Billy Rizos to Pat Cullen and Anselmo’s extra point opened the scoring to put the Chiefs ahead 10-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Lowell widened its lead 17-0 with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter with a 13-yard run by Gauthier and an Anselmo kick.

A 3-yard run by Gauthier gave Lowell a 23-0 advantage with 11:43 remaining in the first half.

MMA got on the board in the fourth quarter when Charlie Mitchell scored on an 18-yard TD pass from Dave Robinson Mitchell also made the two-point conversion with 11:43 to go.

Gauthier’s 1-yard run and an Anselmo kick with 9:32 to go in the fourth gave Lowell’s its final points for a 30-8 victory.

Billy Rizos completed 8 of 15 pass attempts for 128 yards. Cullen caught 3 passes for 75 yards.

Kirk Matthieu led the Mariners attack with 132 yards on 27 carries. Quarterback Scott Fortune completed 4 of 11 pass attempts for 22 yards and threw 2 interceptions before Robinson, who was resting an injured ankle, entered the game late in the second quarter. Robinson finished the game, completing 6 of 11 passes for 59 yards.
