ORONO – Suzanne Plesman, a freshman attack for the University of Maine field hockey team, has been named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week for games played through Sept. 23.
Plesman, from The Hague, The Netherlands, played a major role in the Black Bears’ 2-1 week scoring two goals and assisting on another in Maine’s two weekend contests.
Plesman was most productive in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Southwest Missouri in which she was credited with one goal and one assist. Plesman earned the honor in her role as a reserve, coming off the bench for coach Jeri Waterhouse.
Maine is currently 6-4-2 after beating Stanford 3-1 and Southwest Missouri, but losing 1-0 to Syracuse.
This is Maine’s first NAC honor although Amy Corbett, Marci Brier and Debra McSweeney have been nominated as Player of the Week. McSweeney recorded her fourth shutout in the Southwest Missouri contest.
Senior midfielder Heather Moon of Pittsfield is now Maine’s career assist leader with 11, surpassing the record of 10 held by Janet Hoskin who played for Maine from 1978-81.
Maine has the weekend off to prepare for its only homestand of the season next week when the Black Bears host California State-Chico in Orono on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m., and Providence on Monday at 11 a.m.
