Work has begun on improvments to North and South Main Street in Brewer, officials at the Maine Department of Transportation have said.
The major project begins at the intersection of North Main and State streets and extends to the Brewer-Eddington town line, said Galen Costigan, MDOT resident engineer. The South Main Street part of the project begins at Harris Street and extends east four-tenths of a mile to Grove Street, Costigan said.
Repaving of North Main Street will include paving shoulders in rural sections, building wheelchair ramps at corners and improving drainage and guard rails.
On South Main Street, the old pavement will be ground off and a new surface laid. Replacement of the deck of Eaton Brook Bridge also will be done.
Lane Construction Corp. of Meriden, Conn. won the contract with a bid of $895,592.
