The Oct. 1 Another Viewpoint by Rep. Joseph Brennan was very cocky and lacking insight. All he could seem to do was attack Gov. McKernan for making law enforcement an issue. The fact is that law enforcement is a very important issue. With a rise in crime in this state, McKernan met this challenge by pressing the state legislature for higher fines and permitting judges to impose tougher sentencing of major felonies. early release was the order of the day to relieve high prison populations.

The point seemed to be lost on him that these people were guilty of crimes against the citizens of the state, and should be punished accordingly. McKernan’s solution was to propose a bond issue for the last two years to build a prison to keep these people off the streets of Maine.

The second point Brennan could have made was why he pardoned a mid-level state employee and political crony. This man ripped us off blind to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars, and got off. By pardoning this man, he was then allowed to get a simliar state job in Massachusetts. With all that state’s problems this was the last thing they needed. Apparently, Rep. Brennan didn’t have too much respect for upholding the laws that his electorate believed he would uphold. If he did, he should have said so, in his self-aggrandizing attack on Gov. McKernan….
