Things didn’t quite work out the way the Maine Secondary School Principals’ Association soccer committee thought it would when it said the state championship soccer games for Classes A and C would be played in eastern Maine.
After all, what would happen if both Class A championship teams from Eastern Maine were schools situated 25 miles or so southwest of Augusta?
That’s exactly what happened to chairman Larry Lathrop and the rest of his five-man committee, which Monday morning played musical game sites in trying to get things staightened out for Saturday’s championship games.
By Monday afternoon, things had ironed themselves out – almost.
One school, Waynflete of Portland, the Western Maine Class D boys champion, is contesting its site change to the committee on Tuesday morning.
What the comittee did do was swap the sites for Classes A and D. The “A” sites were swapped to Western Maine and the “D” sites headed east. That set well with everybody involved, except the people at Waynflete.
“It didn’t make sense for four teams within the Portland area to go all the way to the Bangor area to play,” Lathrop said. “So we moved some sites. Waynflete is contesting the Class D boys site because the committee originally stated that the `D’ games would be held in Western Maine.”
The committee is meeting through a conference call Tuesday at 11 a.m. to decide if the game, scheduled to be against Machias at Doyle Field in Brewer, will be moved again.
Other sites, however, have been officially named.
In Class A, the EM champion Brunswick boys will take on Cape Elizabeth at 10 a.m. at Falmouth High School, while the Mount Ararat girls will face Westbrook in a 1 p.m. game at Scarborough High School.
In Class B, Camden-Rockport, the Eastern Maine champ, will square off against York at 10 a.m. at Scarborough while the Houlton girls will face York in a 2 p.m. title game at Falmouth.
In Class C, two-time defending Eastern Maine champion and state runnerup Schenck of East Millinocket will try to win a state title against St. Dominic of Lewiston at Hampden Academy at 10 a.m. The Van Buren girls, meanwhile, will face WM champion Carrabec of North Anson at 1 p.m. at Doyle Field in Brewer.
The Class D site that is decided is the Katahdin of Sherman Station-Richmond girls matchup, which will be held at 1 p.m. at Union Street Field in Bangor.
