Cony girls win `A’ title

AUGUSTA – Jodi Castonguay scored unassisted during the second series of penalty corners to lead the Cony Rams to a 2-1 Eastern Maine Class A field hockey final victory over the Nokomis Warriors of Newport Wednesday.

The game was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation play and both teams failed to score through 2 overtime periods before Castonguay scored on Cony’s second attack of the second penalty corners series. The Warriors failed to tie the game on their following possession and the Rams were victorious.

Sarah Fenderson scored the game’s first goal for Cony, assisted by Castonguay, 22:43 into the first period.

For the Warriors, Angie Wilber scored from Cindy Cabral at the 23:32 mark of the second half. Nokomis finishes its season at 14-1-1.

In goal for the Rams, Darlene Bernier made 5 saves on 9 shots while Nokomis goalie Christina Smith saved 11 of 14 shots.

Cony advances to the state final with the win and will play the Biddeford Tigers, who defeated South Portland 1-0 Wednesday, at Sabattus on Saturday.
