Braves tip Owls for title

PRESQUE ISLE – Scott Nance was the high scorer for the Husson College Braves with 22 points and helped the Braves to a 75-72 win over the University of Maine-Machias in the championship game of the Star City Shootout here Thursday in men’s basketball action.

In an earlier game, six players scored in double figures to propel the University of Maine-Presque Isle to a 133-79 victory over the University of Maine-Fort Kent in the consolation game.

In the championship game, Scott Brown scored 16 points and Raymond Alley had 12 for the 3-0 Braves. Jeff Shakoor rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.

Husson built a comfortable lead in the second half after leading UMM by only two points at the half.

The Clippers cut into the lead late in the game, but Husson hit its foul shots to pull away.

Drew Meredith was the game’s high scorer with 29 points for the 1-1 Clippers. Todd Middleton scored 22 points and Mike Payne added 16.

In the consolation game, Brian Charette led the scoring for the 2-2 UMPI Owls with 26 points and John Gosselin scored 25. Jason Leyro pumped in 14 points while Richard Drummond, Terry Cummings, and John Stillwagon each had 13.

Cummings became the school’s all-time career scoring leader with 1,680 points.

For the 0-2 Bengals, Troy Daland scored 30 points. Mark Simmons had 20 points and Rick Crosby added 13.

Raymond Alley was picked as the tournament MVP. Members of the all-tournament team were Troy Daland from UMFK, Cummings of UMPI, Meredith and Middleton of UMM, and Brown and Alley of Husson.
