ORONO – Two Maine natives and a 6-foot-3 center from Connecticut have signed NCAA Letters of Intent to play women’s basketball at the University of Maine.
Rita Sullivan of Bangor, Seana Dionne of Millinocket, and Katrina Krom of West Haven, Conn., each signed on with the Black Bears for the ’91-92 season.
Sullivan, a 6-foot center, plays for Bangor High School where she averaged 14.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game last year despite missing a portion of the season with an injury. She is a Street & Smith’s preseason All-America honorable mention and a NEWS All-Maine honorable mention. She also ranks first in her class of 325 with a 4.0 grade point average.
Dionne, a guard for Stearns High School, is a shooter who has range beyond the three-point arc. The 5-8 Dionne averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game last season. Dionne was named the MVP of last summer’s Super Week basketball camp held at Maine.
Krom runs the floor well for a big girl, according to Roberts, and will add depth to Maine’s inside game, which will be missing senior star Rachel Bouchard next year. Krom scored 10 ppg and grabbed 10 rpg for West Haven High School and also played for her state’s AAU Junior Olympic team.
Maine loses just one senior from this year’s team.
The names of the players, who were signed more than a week ago, were released by the university Thursday. The signings are contingent upon the athlete’s acceptance to the school.
