Bruce Crock of Mount Desert Island, Nat Lord of Old Town, and John Bapst’s John Cornett were honored with the LTC Coaches Award, highlighting Sunday’s LTC Football All-Star Banquet at the Bangor Civic Center.

Crock and Lord, both seniors, shared the Class B honor, while Cornett earned the Class C award as a junior. The LTC Coaches Award, which goes to the league’s player of the year, is given on the basis of athletic ability, academic achievement, leadership, and citizenship.

Class B state champion Orono placed eight players on the All-LTC Class B First Team. Red Riots Coach Bob Lucy was honored as the Class B Coach of the Year.

Dexter and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield each had eight players tabbed for the All-LTC Class C First Team. John Bapst Coach John Cornett claimed Coach of the Year accolades.

Players, coaches, parents, and friends representing each of the 14 schools turned out for the annual tribute, which was sponsored by WVII-TV (Channel 7) of Bangor. University of Maine football coach Kirk Ferentz was the guest speaker. He talked to the audience about setting goals.

Coaches could not decide between Lord and Crock, who spearheaded their respective teams to victory this fall. Lord, a 6-foot, 199-pounder, was a first-team pick at tailback and defensive end. Crock (6-2, 205) garnered recognition for his play at fullback and defensive end.

Orono senior tackle and defensive end Scott Ismail and Riots placekicker-linebacker Dave Best were the other two-way, first-team picks in Class B.

Also named to the LTC “B” First Team were: Orono – Mark Smith, Rob Yerxa, Casey Cunningham, Mark Severance, Andy Galeati, and Eddie Hall; Old Town – Chris Taylor and Dan Baker; Mattanawcook Academy – Steve Rollins, Tom Van Buren, Jeff Polk, and Darren Whitney; Bucksport – Art Fairbrother, Todd Orcutt, and Cory Bennett; Stearns – Will Daisey; Hampden Academy – George O’Connor; Foxcroft Academy – John Sharrow.

Cornett, a shifty 5-foot-6, 140-pounder, was a two-way honoree for the Crusaders of Bangor at tailback and free safety. Dexter sophomore Ted Gerickont, a two-way tackle, and MCI senior guard and defensive end James Richards also were picked on offense and defense.

Also earning spots on the Class C first team were: Dexter – Kirby Reardon, Jason Hallee, Peter Bartlett, Jon Crosby, Bill Chabot, and Brian Smith; MCI – Colby Wyatt, Jim Baldwin, Jon Hughes, Aaron Cianchette, Steve Shaw, John DeSisto, and Chris Heaton; John Bapst – Ken Rassi, Bryn Owen, Will Brown, Kevin Mailepors, and Maurice Day.

There was also a feeling of sadness in the air among LTC coaches, many of whom took a few moments to offer their best wishes to Tom Sullivan. “Sully” has called it quits after 10 years as the Bucksport head coach.

Channel 7 also presented awards for Most Inspirational Players. Recipients were: Class B – offense, Taylor, Old Town; defense, Crock, MDI; Class C – offense, Reardon, Dexter; defense, Will Brown, John Bapst.
