ROCKLAND — Leigh McCarthy, a free-lance writer for the Bangor Daily News, will be guest speaker at a meeting of the Midcoast Maine Branch of the American Association of University Women Friday, Dec. 14, at the Congregational church. A silent auction will be conducted at 11 a.m. to benefit the Educational Foundation. McCarthy will address members on the subject, “A Woman’s Eye,” after lunch.

McCarthy is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Colorado with a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. For the past four years she has served on the board of directors of the Bangor Education Foundation, which works to renew public education in Bangor and in north-central Maine.

Hostesses for dessert and coffee will be Eleanor Clapp, Laura Saunders, Gertrude Allen and Mary Carlson.

Literature Group I will meet Friday, Dec. 7, at the home of Jean Nickel to discuss “Parallel Lives” by Phyllis Rose. Barbara Watson will lead the discussion.

Literature Group II will meet the same day at the home of Margaret Rowe. Carla Quijano will lead the discussion on Scandinavian authors Isak Dinesen, Cara Sandel and Sigrid Unset. The Art Group will meet briefly after the regular monthly meeting.
