Fiji 24-hour marathon to be held Feb. 16-17

ORONO — The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta are gearing up for another “Fiji 24-Hour Relay Marathon” in February, one of several service programs put on by the University of Maine fraternity.

The fraternity has scheduled Feb. 16 and 17 for the 1991 marathon. Phi Gamma Delta and the American Cancer Society have held the marathon for 12 years and over the past eight years have raised $42,000. Data for the first four years were not available.

This fall, the fraternity helped the Salvation Army gather food for needy people in the Orono and Bangor area. Richard Spies, the fraternity’s public relations chairman, estimated that on the weekend before Thanksgiving, 400 pounds of food was raised and distributed throughout the area.

The fraternity has begun a service program wherein members visit an Old Town nursing home twice a month and spend time with the home’s residents.
