Canada ties U.S. skaters

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – Mike Craig’s power-play goal with just 4:23 left enabled defending champ Canada to tie the United States 4-4 at the World Junior Championships here Thursday evening.

University of Maine defenseman Chris Imes did not register a point and Black Bear goalie Mike Dunham did not play.

Dunham, who was named the U.S. Player of the Game by the media for his 31-save performance in Wednesday’s 4-2 loss to the Soviet Union, is expected to play Saturday night’s 9:30 (EST) game against Finland in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. The U.S. team will play Czechoslovakia on Sunday night at 9:30 in Saskatoon.

Canada is now 1-0-1 in the eight-team, round robin tournament while the U.S. is 0-1-1.

The U.S. spotted Canada a 1-0 lead on Pat Falloon’s goal just 2:07 into the game before storming back for three goals later in the period.

Harvard University’s Ted Drury tied it at 5:27, Boston University’s Keith Tkachuk got the second goal at 17:03, and Michigan Tech’s Jim Storm scored 58 seconds later.

Eric Lindros’ second-period, power-play goal and Steve Rice’s goal at the 7:13 mark of the third period tied it for the Canadians but Lake Superior State’s Doug Weight gave the Americans a 4-3 lead with 9:31 remaining.

U.S. goalie Mike Heinke of Providence College finished with 21 saves while Canadian netminder Trevor Kidd made 17 stops.

Weight and Lindros had an assist apiece to go with their goals and Canada defenseman Chris Snell had two assists.
