Mariners edge Springfield 6-5

PORTLAND – Lou Crawford scored two goals, including one that sparked a three-point run in 59 seconds, as the Maine Mariners clung to a 6-5 win over the Springfield Indians in American Hockey League action Friday night.

The Mariners’ narrow victory extended a home winning streak to six and increased the team’s record to 15-16-3. Springfield fell to 24-14-3.

With the game tied 1-1, Crawford scored his first goal at 3:14 of the second as Ralph Barahona and John Byce followed suit to give Maine a 4-1 lead in less than a minute.

Maine’s three points followed goals by Ron Hoover for the Mariners and James Black for the Indians.

Springfield’s Blair Atcheynum scored with 26 seconds remaining in the second and Yvon Corriveau added a power-play goal at 2:15 of the third to pull Springfield within one at 4-3.

Maine scored two more goals by Dave Donnelly and Crawford, but each time the Indians answered with goals of their own. Springfield’s Chris Tancill and Black each added third-period goals, but the Indians’ rally fell short.
