Caribou gets training grant for child care

CARIBOU — The Caribou Adult Education program has been awarded a Carl Perkins vocational training grant by the Maine Department of Education to provide child-care provider training in central Aroostook County. During the winter-spring semester, two levels of instruction will be offered for people interested in working with preschool children.

The basic-level child-care provider course involves 45 hours of classroom instruction and 12 hours of clinical experience in a day-care center. The course covers topics of importance for people caring for infants and children. Topics include developmental play, child abuse and neglect issues, normal growth and development of children, nuitrition and safety issues.

People interested in having day care at their residences would gain knowledge and information. Included would be the basic setting up of a safe play area and business aspects of bookkeeping and tax records. There would be valuable experience in working with preschool children, program officials said.

Speakers from the community will cover topics. Students will be certified by the American Red Cross in first aid and CPR.

Lead instructor of the course will be Debbie Smith, R.N., of Woodland, who has experience as a public health nurse and instructor.

Supervising the evening care program will be Ann Chapman of Woodland. Students will gain practical experience at the child-care center at the Caribou Learning Center.

The advanced level of child-care provider instruction is a course focusing on early childhood issues. It is designed for those working with young children in a day-care setting or elsewhere. Each of 15 classes will highlight a topic and will be taught by a specialist. Topics will include language development, social interaction, sexual development, creativity and working with families.

People interested in the courses may register by calling the Caribou Adult Education office.
