Heat pump energy saver earns CMP rebate

CAMDEN — Central Maine Power Co. has awarded an energy-management rebate of $26,249 to the Lyngood Corp. for its Knowlton Center project in Camden.

The developers have installed a heat pump at the project that uses water from the Megunticook River to supply about 65 percent of its energy needs. Annual electricity savings from the heat pump are estimated at 174,900 kilowatt-hours.

The technology could be used by any year-round facility near fresh or salt water, according to officials of CMP. Areas that are not close to water could design a similar heat pump using one or two deep wells, the officials said.

The Knowlton Center project is located in the former Knowlton Bros. machine and patent shop. The building also has housed foundry and mill operations.

The property has been developed into a commercial, retail and residential property in the interest of Eastman Kodak Co., which reportedly is ready to purchase the development.
