Bangor Christian
The Lady Patriots held a fund-raiser on Jan. 3 for a future basketball tournament. They held an alumni game against the 1988-89 team. The current Lady Patriots won.
The first semester will close Jan. 18, with exams taking place Jan. 16-18.
The senior class has voted to travel to Orlando, Fla., May 29-June 5. They have several fund-raisers planned. — Mark Chiavelli, Mark Jamison
Bangor High
The Key Club held its first bottle drive of the year on Jan. 5. The money earned will go toward Key Club scholarships and the Key Club Convention held in the spring.
Members of S.E.E.D.– Students Ending Environmental Destruction — were busy during vacation. After spending two days delivering information to Bangor homes about the city recycling program, they spent New Year’s Day collecting bottles. Collected were $288.55 worth of bottles and cans. Last Saturday, members stuffed envelopes with detailed explanations about the recycling program.
National Honor Society members annually vote for two senior members to receive Bangor High School’s National Honor Society scholarship in the amount of $200 for each student. Recently chosen were Andy Seguin and Sarah Currie. — Sarah Currie, Mary Shibles, Moriah Coughlin
Center Drive
The end of the second ranking quarter will be Jan. 18.
No school will be held Jan. 21, in honor of Martin Luther King Day.
The annual cheerleading competition will take place Jan. 23 at Glenburn. We hope to see a good competition.
Parents of eighth-graders will be meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, to make plans for this year’s graduation.
Rank cards will be sent home Jan. 25. There will also be a school dance that day. — Kristi Brooks
Etna-Dixmont
The stock market team from Etna-Dixmont Middle School has been playing the stock market game all year. The team of 15 pupils is under the direction of teacher Peter Foltz and team captain Walter Hall, an eighth-grader.
The team has placed first in its region, and fourth in the state against teams from other middle schools and high schools. A statewide recognition banquet will be held in the spring.
Hermon High
An English class is planning a January Celebration in T-4 on Jan. 14. Students will look to both the past and future — like the Roman god Janus, for whom the month is named. They’ll celebrate their 18th birthdays by identifying classmates from baby pictures.
They’ll also assume the identities of characters from the literature they’ve read during first semester, and determine classmates’ literary identities as they begin reviewing for midterm exams. The students have invited several staff members to join in.
Blue and Gold Night will be held Jan. 10, when the girls basketball team plays host to Ellsworth, and on Jan. 15 when the boys are host to Mount View. Any student wearing blue-and-gold clothing will be admitted free to these games. Come and support the Hawks.
Early acceptances include Vikki Webster to the University of Maine at Farmington, and Peggy McMullen to Rivier College.
On April 4, students from Hermon High School will participate in the annual Maine Citizen Bee. This regional competition in civic education is set to take place at the University of Maine in Orono. Our participants will be: Robert Blackburn, James Herrick and Jason Plourde, and alternate Jon Godfrey. — Vikki Webster
Orono High
The yearbook needs more pictures, and people to work with them. Meetings are held 4-7 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays.
It’s time to start thinking about Project Graduation and chemical-free parties. An organizational meeting for parents of seniors will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the home economics room. — Abby Curtis

Catholic Schools Week will be held Jan. 27-Feb. 1.
Seventh-grader Nicole Dunham was chosen a semifinalist in a poetry contest sponsored by Watermark Press. Her entry will be published in an anthology.
The chess team, directed by Karen Young and Mike Schaab, will begin its season Wednesday, Jan. 9.
The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a free-throw contest at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the school. Registration forms will be available at the school or at the door.
