Paul Bunyan Tournament HUSSON vs. TRINITY
Time, site: 5:30 p.m., Newman Gymnasium, Bangor.
Records: Husson 8-4; Trinity 2-5
Key players: Husson – F Sharon Siebert (20.2 ppg), G Christine Hunter (7.0 ppg), G Kristi Wildman (6.3 ppg), G/F Susan Lea (6.2 ppg), C Jill MacGregor (6.1 ppg); Trinity – G Jen Bodenrader (12.7 ppg), F Karen Devaney (10.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg), F Kathy Reinfrank (8.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg)
Outlook: Friday’s first-round game against Trinity will be the Lady Braves third game since Dec. 11. Trinity College, however, is the team the Braves may want to face to shake off some of that rust. Husson’s Stephanie Lebel, a 6-foot freshman reserve center, is lost for the season (academics), but Anne Cote, a 5-10 transfer from UM-Machias, becomes eligible. Trinity has struggled to date, in part because only seven people are on the active roster. This is the second Paul Bunyan Tournament for the Husson women.
UM-MACHIAS vs. WESTBROOK
Time, site: 1 p.m., Friday, Newman Gymnasium, Bangor.
Records: UM-Machias 2-6; Westbrook 1-9
Key players: UM-Machias – G-F Tracey Kershner (17 ppg), C Jen Sheppard (10 ppg, 9.6 rpg); F Tracey Wedge (9.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg); G Wanese Willey (7 ppg, 5.4 apg, 3 spg); F Laura Baker (4 ppg, 6 rpg); Westbrook – G Lorraine McNerny (16 ppg), G Lori Chamberlain (2 ppg, 5 rpg), F Susan Bagarella (2 ppg, 2 rpg), F Laurie Burgess (2.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg), C Heather Corneliusen
Outlook: Westbrook College is a first-year program. UM-Machias lost one starter (transfer) during the semester break. The UMM Clippers just returned to practice this week. Westbrook will have only eight players for Friday’s game and nine for Saturday, so it will try to play a half-court game. McNerny is the only Westbrook player who played four years of high school basketball, but should be helped by the second-semester addition of Corneliusen, who scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds in her first game. Kershner’s scoring coming off the bench will be key for UMM.
The tournament schedule: Saturday: championship game, 2 p.m.; consolation game, 10 a.m.
Other games scheduled: Wheaton at Colby 5:30; Babson at Bates 7 p.m.
