Penobscot Tribal Representative

* Attean, Priscilla A. Attean, 49, is tribal/state relations officer for the Penobscot Indian Nation and is starting her fourth term in the Legislature. She is a member of the State-Tribal Relations Task Force of the National Council of State Legislatures. Attean has studied business administration at the University of Maine. She is on the board of the Abnaki Girl Scout Council. She is a member of the Penobscot Nation’s constitution committee, museum committee and census committee. She enjoys reading and arts and crafts.

Passamaquoddy Representative

Soctomah, Madonna M. Soctomah, 48, succeeds Passamaquoddy Rep. Joseph A. Nicholas. She is assistant health director for Community Health Services. She’s a graduate of Shead High School in Eastport who studied at Husson College and served in the U.S. Navy. She has served six years on the Passamaquoddy Tribal Council. She also serves on the tribal education committee, scholarship committee and St. Ann’s Parish Council. She is the first woman elected to represent the Passamaquoddy Tribe in the Legislature.

District 1

* Lawrence, Mark W., D-Kittery. Represents part of Kittery. Lawrence, 32, is an attorney starting his second term in the House. He holds a law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in Portland and is a graduate of Bowdoin College and Traip Academy in Kittery. Lawrence is a trustee of the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum and a director of the Kittery Land Trust.

District 2

Ott, David N., R-York. Represents parts of Kittery and York. Ott, 53, is an attorney with a firm in York. He succeeds longtime Rep. Neil Rolde of York, who was the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 1990. Ott has been a town-meeting moderator in York and Ogunquit. A native of Titusville, Pa., he holds a law degree from Dickinson School of Law and a political-science degree from Bucknell University. He is president of the York Volunteer Ambulance Association and in his spare time, enjoys boating.

District 3

Hichens, Walter W., R-Eliot. Represents Eliot and parts of Kittery and York. Hichens, who has 20 years of previous legislative experience, is returning to the State House after a four-year absence. Hichens, 73, is a vegetable gardener and poultry farmer. He’s been a selectman, water-district director and Chamber of Commerce chairman and is the author of six books of poetry and two history books. He succeeds longtime Rep. Orland McPherson.

District 4

* Farnum, Wesley, R-South Berwick. Represents North Berwick, South Berwick and part of Wells. Farnum, 70, is starting his fourth term in the House. Farnum served in the Merchant Marine in World War II and was a member of the Coast Guard Reserve. He is a retired elementary school principal and has served on the local planning board. He graduated from Lewiston High School and the University of Maine, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in administration and a certificate of advanced study. He is a coin collector and amateur photographer.

District 5

* Murphy, Eleanor M., R-Berwick. Represents Berwick and Lebanon. Murphy, 59, is starting her fifth term. Murphy is a retired retail grocer who owns a guest house. A Berwick native, she has been a selectman and now is a member of the York County Jail Advisory Committee and also a regional tourism commission. She was active in the fight to keep a commercial landfill out of the towns of Lebanon and Berwick. She is a charter member of the Berwick Historical Society and chairman of the group’s annual crafts fair.

District 6

Carleton, Joseph G., Jr., R-Wells. Represents Ogunquit and part of Wells. Carleton, 45, is an attorney who succeeds Rep. Alberta Wentworth of Wells. He’s a Brooklyn, N.Y., native who earned a law degree from Boston University Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College. He served in the New Hampshire Air National Guard for eight years. He is president of the Wells Library, a town-meeting moderator, chairman of the Adult Education Advisory Council and enjoys playing golf.

District 7

*Libby, Jack L., R-Kennebunk. Represents Kennebunk and part of Wells. Libby, 62, is starting his second term in the House. He owns a real-estate business in Kennebunk. He is a Marine Corps veteran who graduated from Kennebunk High School and studied at the University of Maine. Libby was a Kennebunk selectman for 12 years and was chairman of the board for nine years. He also served nine years on the SAD 71 school board, four of those years as chairman. He enjoys hunting and fishing.

District 8

Wentworth, Jason, D-Kennebunkport. Represents Arundel, Kennebunkport and Lyman. Wentworth, 24, is the first Democrat since the Civil War to represent Kennebunkport. He succeeds retiring Rep. H. Stedman Seavey Jr. He is a waste-management consultant who holds a political-science degree from the University of Southern Maine. He is chairman of the Arundel Solid Waste Committee and co-chairman of the Tri-Town Recycling Committee.

District 9

Gean, Donald H., D-Alfred. Represents Acton, Alfred, Shapleigh and part of Sanford. Gean succeeds Rep. Vinton Ridley, D-Shapleigh, who retired after a decade. Gean, 47, is executive director of the York County Shelter Program which offers several programs for homeless people. He was founding president of the Maine Coalition for the Homeless and is on the board of the National Coalition for the Homeless. An Iowa native, Gean is an Air Force veteran who holds a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University. He also completed the substance-abuse training program at the University of Iowa. Gean and his family collect lemon squeezers.

District 10

* Hale, Mona Walker, D-Sanford. Represents part of Sanford. Hale is a retired personnel assistant for Wasco Products Inc. who is starting her fourth term in the House. Hale, 57, was a Sanford selectman for five years and also active on the town budget committee. She studied business and accounting at Nasson College and the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham. She has been active in the PTA, charity fund drives, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

District 11

* Paul, Norman R., D-Sanford. Represents part of Sanford. A retired police officer and deputy police chief in Sanford, Paul, 63, is starting his fourth term in the House. Paul served in World War II and the Korean War with the Navy. He graduated from Sanford High School and studied at the University of Maine at Orono and at Babson College. Paul is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masons. He enjoys hunting and fishing. Paul was a professional baseball player on a farm team of the New York Giants.

District 12

* Sheltra, Carl F., D-Biddeford. Represents part of Biddeford. Sheltra, 68, is starting his sixth term in the House. He is a retired Yellow Pages salesman for NYNEX. He graduated from Hebron Academy and studied at the University of Maine before joining the Army and serving in Europe during World War II. Sheltra has been York County treasurer and a high-school sports booster. He is a past exalted ruler of the Biddeford-Saco Lodge of Elks.

District 13

* Dutremble, Lucien A., D-Biddeford. Represents part of Biddeford. Dutremble, 68, who was mayor of Biddeford from 1974 to 1979, is starting his third consecutive term in the House, and his fifth term overall. A retired grocer, Dutremble represents one-half of the Legislature’s only father-son team. His son is Sen. Dennis L. Dutremble of Biddeford. A graduate of St. Louis High School in Biddeford, Dutremble is a Marine Corps veteran. He was a York County commissioner from 1959 to 1973. Dutremble has been active in the St. Joseph Parish Council, Elks and Knights of Columbus.

District 14

* Plourde, Charles C., D-Biddeford. Represents Dayton and parts of Biddeford and Hollis. Plourde, 45, is starting his second term in the House. He is a registered financial and insurance planner. An Air Force veteran, Plourde earned a bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Southern Maine. He is chairman of the Biddeford Economic Improvement Commission and a past city councilor. He enjoys golf, walleyball, fishing and swimming.

District 15

* Lord, Willis A., R-North Waterboro. Represents Cornish, Limerick, Limington and Waterboro. Lord is a retired farmer who is starting his fourth term in the House. Lord, 72, has been active in local government, serving as a Waterboro selectman, road commissioner, and school-board member. Lord also has been a town-meeting moderator for many years. Born in Saugus, Mass., he enjoys working in his woodlot and watching football and basketball games on TV.

District 16

Waterman, Merton C., D-Bar Mills. Represents Buxton and part of Hollis. Waterman, 66, defeated Rep. Harvey Donald, R-West Buxton, to win his first term in the House. A retired maintenance supervisor for New England Telephone Co., he graduated from Samuel Hanson High School in Buxton and served in the Army during World War II. He was board chairman for SAD 6 and a school-board member for several years. He and his wife enjoy traveling.

District 17

Kerr, George J., D-Old Orchard Beach. Represents Old Orchard Beach and part of Saco. Kerr, 36, succeeds Rep. John McSweeney who held this seat for 12 years. Kerr runs a restaurant-lounge and a motel in Old Orchard Beach. He’s a former town councilor and council chairman. A Florida native, Kerr holds a degree from the University of Southern Maine. He’s been active in United Way and the Lions Club. He enjoys water skiing and scuba diving.

District 18

* Nadeau, Guy R., D-Saco. Represents part of Saco. Nadeau, 34, is starting his fourth term in the House. Nadeau is employed as a financial analyst for Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution. He is a graduate of Thornton Academy, where he was class president, and holds a bachelor’s degree in political-science from Assumption College in Massachusetts. He enjoys travel, reading and sports.

District 19

* Pendleton, Peggy A., R-Scarborough. Represents parts of Saco and Scarborough. Pendleton, 44, is a registered nurse who is a consultant for health occupations at Southern Maine Technical College. Pendleton earned a nursing degree from Eastern Maine Medical Center and an associate degree in therapeutic recreation at the University of Southern Maine. She is a senior in applied technology at USM. She enjoys sewing, boating, fishing and hiking.

District 20

Pendexter, Joan M., R-Scarborough. Represents part of Scarborough. A Van Buren native, Pendexter, 43, succeeds Rep. Linwood Higgins, R-Scarborough, who’d served 16 years in the House. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner who holds degrees from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Southern Maine. She is past president of the Junior League of Portland and chairman of the Maine Highway Safety Commission.

District 21

Simonds, Stephen P., D-Cape Elizabeth. Represents Cape Elizabeth. Simonds, 66, defeated House Minority Leader Mary Clark Webster in an upset to win his first House term. Simonds holds a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. He works part-time at the University of Southern Maine. He’s a past member and chairman of the Cape Elizabeth Town Council. He is a pilot and enjoys outdoor recreation.

District 22

* Santo DiPietro, D-South Portland. Represents part of South Portland. The 56-year-old DiPietro owns and operates a grocery store in South Portland. He graduated from Portland High School and attended Northeast Business College. He served on the South Portland City Council for nine years and was mayor in 1982. DiPietro is co-founder of the new South Portland Boys Club. He enjoys playing golf in his spare time.

District 23

* Anthony, Cushman D., D-South Portland. Represents part of South Portland. Anthony, 51, is an attorney who has been active on social-services issues. A Boston native, he graduated Amherst College in Massachusetts and the University of Michigan School of Law. He was an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Anthony is on the board of the Coalition for Maine’s Children, the Maine Center on Deafness, Sentencing Options Inc. and the Soviet Sister City Committee of Greater Portland. He is chairman of the Cumberland County Human Services Board. He enjoys music, running and sailing.

District 24

* Macomber, Harold M., D-South Portland. Represents part of South Portland. Macomber, 66, is starting his sixth term in the House. He is a retired postal worker who was raised in New Hampshire. He is a U.S. Army veteran with service as an infantryman in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the South Portland City Council for six years and was mayor of the city in 1978. He has been active in youth organizations and has run the state Little League tournament for girls.

District 25

* Rand, Anne M., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Rand, 44, and her husband own and operate Dale Rand Printing Co. in Portland. She is a graduate of Cathedral High School and the Maine School of Practical Nursing in Portland. Rand is a member of city and county Democratic committees and has been a delegate to the last six Democratic state conventions. She is a trustee of the Greater Portland Federated Labor Council.

District 26

* Oliver, James V., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Oliver, 57, is executive director of the Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council, a group that runs 10 different programs for low-income people. He has a bachelor’s degree in education from Westchester State College and spent five years in the Peace Corps in the 1960s. Oliver has been active in low-income and union organizing in Nevada, Florida, Philadelphia and Maine.

District 27

* Adams, Herbert C., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Adams, 37, is a free-lance journalist, specializing in Maine history. A Lewiston native, he holds a degree in history from the University of Southern Maine. He is writing a biography of the late Gov. Percival Baxter. He was a founder of the Greater Portland Martin Luther King Day Committee and a founder of Parkside Neighborhood Association. He is on the board of East End Children’s Day Care Center.

District 28

Richardson, Fred L., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Richardson, 48, succeeds Rep. Gerard P. Conley Jr., who moved up to the Senate. Richardson is a former college professor who is now self-employed. He holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University and two master’s degrees. Richardson is a member of the Portland School Committee. He served in Ethiopia with the Peace Corps and is active in Portland’s sister-city relations with Archangel in the Soviet Union and Shinagawa in Japan.

District 29

* Manning, Peter J., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Manning, 42, is a customer-service representative for a home-improvement business who graduated from Portland High School and Ricker College. He has been House chairman of the Human Resources Committee for several years. Manning is active on city and county Democratic committees. He is past president of St. Joseph the Provider, a Portland thrift-shop service.

District 30

* Ketover, Harriet A., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Ketover is a television producer and moderator. She is a graduate of Deering High School and Ward Business School. She was chairman of the successful referendum campaign to create a statewide 9-1-1 emergency telephone system. She is a board member of the American Cancer Society, the Holocaust Human Rights Center and Portland Area Community Television. She also is active on city and state Earth Day committees, the planning committee for a Cumberland County convention center, and the YMCA Youth in Government program.

District 31

* Gurney, Christopher S., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Gurney, 25, is starting his third term in the House. He works in a family seasonal business. Gurney is a Portland High School graduate who studied at Florida Institute of Technology and is pursuing a degree in computer technology at the University of Southern Maine. He has been active on city and county Democratic committees. Gurney’s hobbies include computers, drafting and reading.

District 32

* Hoglund, Annette M., D-Portland. Represents part of Portland. Hoglund, 47, is a self-employed housing developer. She is studying business administration at Westbrook College and holds a paralegal certificate from the University of Southern Maine. She is active in the Riverton Community Association, city and county Democratic committees, and the League of Women Voters. She also is active in the Maine Women’s Lobby, the Family Planning Association of Maine and the Cumberland County Convention Center committee.

District 33

* O’Gara, William B., D-Westbrook. Represents parts of Westbrook and Portland. O’Gara, 59, is starting his fourth term in the House. A retired teacher who works as a real-estate agent, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College. O’Gara served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953. He was mayor of Westbrook from 1974 to 1984. He is a past president of the South Portland Teachers Association and has been chairman of the Westbrook Democratic City Committee. He is active in the Westbrook Lions Club and St. Mary’s Church. He enjoys playing golf and reading.

District 34

Lemke, William, D-Westbrook. Represents part of Westbrook. Lemke, 43, upset Rep. Philip Curran, R-Westbrook, to win his first term in the House. He is an associate history professor at St. Joseph’s College. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maine. Lemke wrote “The Wild, Wild East,” a Maine history book. He is president of Prides Corner Concerned Citizens and a regent of Walker Memorial Library. He enjoys travel and tennis.

* McKeen, Elden, D-Windham. Represents parts of Gorham, Westbrook and Windham. McKeen, 52, is starting his second term in the House. He has been a railroad yard clerk for 28 years for Guilford Transportation’s Portland Terminal Co. McKeen graduated from Windham High School and served two years in the Army. He was chairman of District 152, Transportation Communications Union, for 10 years. McKeen serves on the Cumberland County Private Industry Council.

District 36

* Larrivee, Anne M., D-Gorham. Represents part of Gorham. Larrivee, 47, owns a business that provides office services and word processing. She graduated from Deering High School and studied at the University of Southern Maine. Larrivee is a past chairman of the Gorham Town Council and the town’s Open Space Preservation Committee. She is active in the Girl Scouts and is a trustee of Gorham Savings Bank.

District 37

Kontos, Carol A., D-Windham. Represents part of Windham. Kontos upset Rep. Barbara Strout, R-Windham, to win her first term in the House. Kontos, 44, is an associate professor of English at the University of Maine at Augusta. An Illinois native, she holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree from the University of Maine. She is active in the Windham PTA, Windham Athletic Boosters and St. Ann’s Episcopal Church. Her hobbies include tennis, cross-country skiing and sailing.

District 38

* Butland, Jeffrey H., R-Cumberland. Represents parts of Cumberland, Windham and Yarmouth. Butland, 40, is a customer-service team leader for L.L. Bean in Freeport. He holds a political-science degree from Bates College and graduated from Greely High School in Cumberland. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and 14 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. He is a former town councilor who is active in the Cumberland Historical Society and the Cumberland Mainland and Island Land Trust.

* Reed, Gary W., R-Falmouth. Represents Falmouth and parts of Portland and Cumberland. Reed, 51, is starting his third term in the House. Reed is manager of data processing for S.D. Warren Co. in Westbrook. He graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn and earned a business-administration degree from the University of Maine. He is past chairman of both the Falmouth Charter Review Commission and the Falmouth Board of Zoning Appeals. He is a past president of the Falmouth Jaycees and a past vice president of Maine Jaycees.

District 40

* Foss, Judith C., R-Yarmouth. Represents North Yarmouth and part of Yarmouth. Foss, 49, is starting her fourth term in the House. She has served on the Appropriations Committee for several years. A Rhode Island native, she is a graduate of Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. She is studying for an MBA degree at the University of Southern Maine. She is a former member of the Yarmouth School Committee and is on the board of the Trout Foundation which makes grants to rural schools.

* Mitchell, James, D-Freeport. Represents Freeport and Pownal. Mitchell, 48, is starting his sixth term in the House. He has been active in the Legislature on environmental issues. Mitchell was overseer of the Appalachian Trail in western Maine for more than 15 years. He is active in the Maine chapter of the Appalachian Trail Club and works as a salesman at the L.L. Bean store in Freeport. Mitchell is a graduate of the University of Maine.

District 42

* Rydell, Charlene B., D-Brunswick. Represents part of Brunswick. Rydell, 49, was House chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee for four years and now serves on the Appropriations Committee. She is a social-service consultant with a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a master’s degree in social services from Case Western Reserve University. Rydell has been active in many groups, including Merrymeeting AIDS Support Services, Maine AIDS Hospice, the League of Women Voters, Maine Coalition for Healthy Mothers and the Maine Women’s Lobby.

District 43

Pfeiffer, Sophia Douglass, D-Brunswick. Represents part of Brunswick. Pfeiffer, 72, succeeds Rep. Charles Priest, D-Brunswick, who left the House after serving three terms. A New York City native, she is a lawyer who retired from a career as chief staff attorney to the Rhode Island Supreme Court. She graduated from Vassar College and earned a law degree at Northeastern University School of Law. She has been chairman of the Brunswick Village Review Board and also served on the town’s comprehensive planning committee. In her spare time, she enjoys rowing.

District 44

* Carroll, Donnell P., D-Gray. Represents Gray and New Gloucester. Carroll, 40, is starting his fifth term in the House. He serves on the Appropriations Committee. Carroll is manager of Medec Ambulance of Portland. He graduated from Gray-New Gloucester High School and earned a political science degree from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has served on the local school board and is a charter member of the Gray-New Gloucester Lions Club. He also is active in youth sports programs and enjoys bicycling in his spare time.

District 45

* Simpson, P. Kelley, D-Casco. Represents Casco, Naples, Raymond and Otisfield. Simpson, 37, is owner-director of a children’s preschool and summer camp. He is a graduate of Milford (N.H.) Area High School and the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in political science, was vice president of the student government and a member of the student senate. Simpson also holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Southern Maine. He is starting his fourth term in the House.

District 46

Kutasi, Leslie Jr., R-Bridgton. Represents Bridgton, Harrison, Sebago, Hiram and Sweden. Kutasi succeeds Rep. Philip Jackson, R-Harrison, who left the House after serving for 10 years. Kutasi, 32, runs a bottle-redemption center and a catalog sales store. Born in Brussels, Belgium, he is a past chairman of the Board of Selectmen in Bridgton and also served on the town budget committee. He is active in the Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.

District 47

* Greenlaw, Ernest C., R-Standish. Represents Baldwin and Standish. Greenlaw, 65, is starting his fifth term in the House. He has served on the Fisheries and Wildlife Committee all of his eight years in the Legislature. He is retired from a 25-year career with the South Portland Fire Department, where he attained the rank of captain. He graduated from South Portland High School, and took courses at Wentworth Institute, Boston College, Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and the University of Southern Maine. He served three years with the Navy in World War II. Greenlaw has served on the Standish Planning Board and the Standish Charter Commission. He is active in the Standish Kiwanis Club and the VFW.

District 48

* Hastings, Peter G., R-Fryeburg. Represents Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, Porter, Stoneham, Stow, Newfield and Parsonsfield. Hastings, 55, is starting his second term in the House. He is an attorney working in a family law firm that has employed five generations of his family. Hastings graduated from Fryeburg Academy, Bowdoin College and Boston University Law School. He also studied at New York University’s Graduate School of Business. He has been active in local government and enjoys all outdoor sports and reading.

Barth, Alvin L. Jr., R-Bethel. Represents Avon, Rangeley, Weld, Bethel, Byron, Gilead, Hanover, Lovell, Newry, Upton, Waterford and the plantations of Rangeley, Weld, Bethel, Byron, Gilead, Hanover, Lovell, Newry, Upton, Waterford and the plantations of Rangeley, Sandy River, Lincoln and Magalloway, plus unorganized territory. Barth, 54, succeeds Rep. Jeffery Mills, D-Bethel, who moved up to the Senate. He is a tree farmer and retired from a career as a teacher and administrator at Gould Academy. He graduated from Gould Academy and Pennsylvania State University. He holds master’s degrees from the University of Utah and Colby College. He has been a school-board member and is active in United Way, the American Diabetes Association and the Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond. He was an international teaching fellow in Melbourne, Australia, in 1970-71. He enjoys hunting, fishing, skiing and golf.

Bennett, Richard A., R-Norway. Represents Norway and Oxford. Bennett, 27, succeeds Rep. Joseph Walker, D-Norway, who did not seek re-election. He is a salesman for Burlington Homes of New England. He graduated from Yarmouth High School and Harvard University. He is a past executive director of the Maine Republican Party and current vice chairman of the party. He is active in the Oxford Hills Rotary Club and enjoys outdoor activities.

District 51

* Hanley, Dana C., R-South Paris. Represents Buckfield, Hebron, Paris and West Paris. Hanley, 28, is starting his third term in the House. He has served four years on the Judiciary Committee. He is an attorney who runs a property-management business. He graduated from Oxford Hills High School and Colby College and earned a law degree from the University of Maine School of Law. He is chairman of the Republican Town Committee in Paris and active in the Kiwanis Club, Maine Sportsman’s Alliance and Norway-Paris Fish and Game Association. He is a trustee of the Paris Hill Historical Society and is on the board of United Way.

* Luther, M. Ida, D-Mexico. Represents Hartford, Mexico, Roxbury, Sumner, Woodstock, Milton Township and part of Rumford. Luther, 55, is starting her second term in the House. She is a homemaker with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Farmington. She has served on the school board in Roxbury and as a trustee of the Mexico Water District. Luther is active in St. Theresa’s Church. She is the mother of triplets who are now 30 years old. She enjoys swimming, hiking and skiing.

* Erwin, Phyllis R., D-Rumford. Represents Andover and part of Rumford. Erwin, 61, is starting her sixth term in the House. Her husband, Edgar Erwin of Rumford, had served eight years in the state Senate but stepped down in 1990. Erwin is a self-employed accountant and income-tax preparer. She graduated from Gardiner High School and from Kennebec School of Commmerce, and has studied at the University of Maine. She is a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. She is active with the Rumford Democratic Town Committee, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Girls State.

District 54

* Heeschen, Conrad, D-Wilton. Represents Carthage, Dixfield, Temple and Wilton, plus unorganized territories. Heeschen is starting his second term in the House. He works as a small farmer and solar-architecture designer. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from MIT. Heeschen has been active in No Thank Q Hydro-Quebec, the citizens’ group that opposed construction of a Central Maine Power Co. transmission line from Canada through western Maine. Locally, he has served on the school board, planning board, town finance committee and the Wilton Comprehensive Plan Review Committee.

District 55

Powers, Basil L., D-Stratton. Represents Carrabassett Valley, Eustis, Industry, Kingfield, Madrid, New Vineyard, Phillips, Strong, Embden, New Portland, Coplin and Dallas plantations, plus unorganized territories. In a major upset, Powers, 58, defeated seven-term incumbent Rep. Edward L. Dexter, R-Kingfield, to win his first term in the House. Powers is a farmer and equipment operator. He served with the Army’s 5th Infantry Division during the Korean conflict. He has campaigned against sludge dumping in northern Franklin County.

District 56

* Bailey, Ronald C., R-Farmington. Represents Farmington and New Sharon. Bailey, 58, is starting his third term in the House. He is a salesman who was assistant superintendent of schools for SAD 9 in Farmington for 12 years and who worked a total of 23 years in education. He graduated from Winthrop High School and the University of Maine and earned a master’s degree at the University of Maine at Farmington. Bailey served in the U.S. Navy in Korean conflict. He is active in the Farmington Kiwanis Club and is vice chairman of the Maine Highway Safety Commission. He is on the boards of the Western Area Agency on Aging and the Western Maine Transportation System. He enjoys camping, fly fishing and wood carving.

District 57

* Pineau, Edward L., D-Jay. Represents Jay, Canton and Peru. Pineau is a 34-year-old paper worker at the James River-Otis Mill in Jay, starting his second term in the House. He graduated from Jay High School and earned an associate degree in criminal justice at the University of Maine at Augusta. He is steward of Local 11, United Paperworkers International Union, and also serves on the Jay School Committee. He is chairman of the Committee to Improve Jay’s Environment and is a coach of youth sports teams. He enjoys hunting and fishing.

* Tracy, Richard H. C., D-Rome. Represents Livermore Falls, Chesterville, Vienna, Belgrade and Rome. Tracy, 39, is starting his third term in the House. He is a lead millwright for Statler Tissue Corp. in Augusta. He graduated from Cony High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Maine at Augusta. He is a trustee of his union local and assistant town clerk in Rome. Tracy also has served on the Rome Appeals Board, the Rome Democratic Town Committee and the Kennebec County Democratic Committee.

* Nutting, John M., D-Leeds. Represents Leeds, Livermore, Turner and part of Auburn. Nutting, 41, is starting his third term in the House. A registered Holstein breeder and dairy farmer in Leeds, he has served four years on the Agriculture Committee. He is a Leavitt High School graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in pre-veterinary studies at the University of Maine. He is past president of the Leeds PTC and enjoys playing golf.

* Aikman, Rosalie H., R-Poland. Represents Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland. Aikman, 45, is starting her second term in the House. She is self-employed in the knitting business and is a graduate of Mechanic Falls High School and the Auburn School of Commerce. She has been a selectman in Poland and also served on the Poland Building Committee. She enjoys gardening, jogging and skiing.

* Lapointe, Jo Anne D., D-Auburn. Represents parts of Auburn. Lapointe, 57, is starting her third term in the House. She is a retired administrator of Central Maine Technical College. She graduated from Mt. Merici Academy in Waterville and studied at Trinity College and the University of Massachusetts. She has served on the board of directors of the Maine Affiliate of the American Heart Association. She also has served on the Maine Advisory Board on Vocational Education.

* Cote, Constance D., D-Auburn. Represents part of Auburn. Cote, 62, is starting her fifth term in the House. She has served on the Judiciary Committee for several years. She hosts a radio show in Lewiston and is coordinator of the Franco-American Festival in Lewiston. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music. She has served on the Tri-County Mental Health Board and has been a trustee of the Sisters of Charity Health Systems at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston.

District 63

* Dore, Susan E., D-Auburn. Represents part of Auburn. Dore is starting her third term in the House. She was an active member of the Taxation Committee during her first two terms. She is a 36-year-old Realtor. She is a graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn and the University of Southern Maine, with a degree in political science. She enjoys downhill skiing and is active in the Junior Achievement program and other organizations.

District 64

St. Onge, Vivian, D-Greene. Represents Greene, Wales and part of Lewiston. St. Onge, 31, upset six-term Rep. John Telow, R-Lewiston, in her first try for elective office in November. A graduate of Lewiston High School, she is self-employed as a seamstress. She is a youth-group leader at St. Francis Mission in Greene. She enjoys all outdoor sports.

District 65

* Aliberti, John A., D-Lewiston. Represents part of Lewiston. Aliberti, 74, is starting his fourth term in the House. He is a retired school teacher and principal. He graduated from Portland High School and Farmington State Normal School and earned a master’s degree at Columbia University. A former member of the Lewiston School Board, Aliberti first won election to the House by defeating the late Rep. Louis Jalbert, who had served 38 years, in a Democratic primary in 1982. Aliberti served in the Army during World War II. He has been active in the Maine Teachers Association and the American Legion. He enjoys golf and harness racing.

District 66

* Boutilier, Bradford E., D-Lewiston. Represents part of Lewiston. Boutilier, 29, is starting his fourth term in the House. He is manager of planning for Sisters of Charity Health Systems at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School and studied at Thomas College and Bates College. He serves on the Lewiston School Board and is on the boards of Community Concepts, Androscoggin Home Health and the Job Start Program. He also serves on the Mayor’s Task Force on Educational Excellence in Lewiston. He enjoys reading, bicycling and basketball.

Ricker, George F., D-Lewiston. Represents part of Lewiston. Ricker, 60, succeeds six-term Rep. Gregory Nadeau, D-Lewiston, who did not seek re-election. Ricker is employed in a small business and is a member of the Lewiston School Committee. He served three previous House terms from 1968 to 1974. He is a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He is active in the Elks and American Legion.

District 68

* Handy, James R., D-Lewiston. Represents part of Lewiston. Handy, 36, is starting his fifth term in the House. He has served on the Education Committee for eight years. Handy works as a househusband and seasonal telemarketing representative for L.L. Bean. He graduated from Lewiston High School and earned a political-science degree from the University of Southern Maine. He serves on the advisory committee to Central Maine Technical College and the board of Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care. He is a former chairman of the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee and member of the Democratic State Committee. He has been active in the YMCA’s Model Legislature and Knights of Columbus.

* Pouliot, Roger M., D-Lewiston. Represents part of Lewiston. Pouliot, 53, is starting his sixth term in the House. He is a member of the Appropriations Committee. He is an insurance salesman who graduated from Lewiston High School and the Auburn School of Commerce. A Lewiston native, he serves on the Lewiston City Council. Pouliot is a U.S. Army veteran and has been active on the Lewiston Democratic City Commmittee and the Democratic State Committee. He also has served on the advisory board of St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. He enjoys golf and boating.

District 70

* Clark, Margaret Pruitt, D-Brunswick. Represents Durham and parts of Auburn, Lisbon and Brunswick. Clark, 44, is starting her third term in the House. A Wisconsin native, she is a sociologist who works as a public policy advocate. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin. She is a former state coordinator for the National Organization for Women. She has been active in the National Council on Alcoholism, the Society of Practicing Sociologists, the Family Planning Association and governor’s task forces on adolescent pregnancy and women’s issues.

* Jalbert, John, D-Lisbon. Represents part of Lisbon. Jalbert, 65, is starting his fourth term in the House. Retired from the Maine Department of Transportation, Jalbert graduated from Lisbon High School and earned degrees from the University of Ottawa and the University of Maine. He is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and he has been elected to the board of selectmen, school board and planning board in the town of Lisbon. Jalbert is active in the VFW, American Legion and Rotary. He enjoys playing golf and cribbage.

District 72

* Stevens, Albert G., R-Sabattus. Represents Sabattus, Bowdoin and Richmond. Stevens, 59, is starting his fourth House term. He is retired from a 30-year career as owner-operator of Stevens Feed and Hardware Store. He graduated from Lewiston High School and completed courses at Central Maine Technical College. He has been tax collector for the town of Sabattus for many years and he has been active in the Sabattus Regional Credit Union.

District 73

* Chonko, Lorraine N., D-Topsham. Represents Topsham and part of Bowdoinham. Chonko, 53, is starting her tenth term in the House. She is the most senior woman member of the House, having first won election in 1972. After serving 12 years on the Appropriations Committee, she will take over House chairmanship of the committee, succeeding the late Rep. Donald Carter in that important post. A homemaker, Chonko is a graduate of Brunswick High School and has been a member of the Topsham Town Finance Committee.

District 74

* Holt, Maria Glen, D-Bath. Represents Dresden, Arrowsic, Woolwich and parts of Bath and Bowdoinham. Holt, 61, is starting her third term in the House. She is a retired public-health nurse and teacher and a homemaker. She graduated from Farmington High School and earned degrees from the University of Maine and Cornell University. She is field director for the Citizens’ Monitoring Network of Safe Power for Maine. She also has been active with the Maine Nuclear Referendum Committee and is a member of Midcoast Health Research Group. She is an amateur botanist and enjoys bird-watching.

District 75

* Small, Mary E., R-Bath. Represents part of Bath. Small, 36, is starting her seventh term in the House. She has served on the Education Committee for eight years and has been the “lead Republican” on that committee for several years. She is a homemaker who graduated from Morse High School and earned a political-science degree from the University of Southern Maine. She is active in the YMCA and the Bath Junior Hospital League.

District 76

* Coles, James Reed, D-Harpswell. Represents Harpswell, Georgetown, Phippsburg and West Bath. Coles, 46, is starting his fourth term in the House. He has been active on environmental issues as a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Marine Resources Committee. He has run a tree service company. He graduated from Brunswick High School and Wesleyan University in Connecticut with a degree in government. He is a U.S. Army veteran who also served in the Army Reserves. Coles has been active in Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Southern Maine, the Bath-Brunswick Rape Crisis Hotline and the Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce.

Heino, Charles H., R-Boothbay. Represents Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb, South Bristol, Southport and Westport. Heino, 59, defeated Rep. Arnold Brewer Jr., D-Boothbay Harbor, to win his first term in the House. Heino is a retired superintendent of schools. He graduated from Rockland High School and the University of Maine, where he also earned a master’s degree and certificate of advanced study. He has been active in Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, PTA, the Midcoast Superintendents Association and Boothbay Fish and Cold Storage. He enjoys hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening.

District 78

* Kilkelly, Marjorie L., D-Wiscasset. Represents Alna, Damariscotta, Newcastle, Whitefield and Wiscasset. Kilkelly, 36, is starting her third term in the House. She is a social-service consultant. She has a B.S. degree in human-services administration from New Hampshire College and an M.S. degree in community economic development from the same college. She has been active in Coastal Enterprise Inc., an economic development corporation in Wiscasset; Share Our Strength, a national hunger awareness project; and the Maine Human Services Council.

District 79

Spear, Robert W., R-Nobleboro. Represents Bremen, Bristol, Nobleboro and Waldoboro. Spear, 47, succeeds Rep. Jeanne Begley, R-Waldoboro, who did not seek re-election. He is a dairy farmer who graduated from Waldoboro High School and the University of Maine with a degree in agricultural science. He has been a selectman and on the school board in Nobleboro for several years. He has been supervisor of the Soil and Water Conservation District in his area for 20 years and he has been a director of Waldoboro Savings Bank for 14 years.

District 80

* Mayo, Joseph W., D-Thomaston. Represents Thomaston, Warren, Friendship and part of Rockland. Mayo, 31, is starting his fifth term in the House and his second term as House majority whip, formerly called assistant House majority leader. An accountant, Mayo has been active on corrections and taxation issues in the Legislature. He graduated from Georges Valley High School and earned a degree in accounting and finance from the University of Maine. He has been active on the Democratic State Committee and is on the boards of Mid-Coast Mental Health and the Mid-Coast Human Resources Council. He also is active in the National Council on Alcoholism in Maine.

* Skoglund, James G., D-St. George. Represents Cushing, North Haven, Owls Head, St. George, South Thomaston, Vinalhaven, Matinicus and Monhegan plantations, plus unorganized territory. Skoglund, 50, is starting his second term in the House representing this island-filled district. He is a retired teacher who graduated from St. George High School and Gorham State Teachers College. Interested in state and local history, Skoglund is active in the St. George Grange, St. George Historical Society and the First Baptist Church of St. George. He is a town-meeting moderator in St. George.

* Melendy, Rita B., D-Rockland. Represents part of Rockland. Melendy, 51, is starting her fifth term in the House. She has been active on corrections issues. A Jay High School graduate, Melendy is a certified medical assistant and a former small-business owner. She is an incorporator of Penobscot Bay Medical Center, a member of the Child Care Resources Advisory Committee and of two committees that advise the Department of Corrections. She is active in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and enjoys reading and gardening.

District 83

Nash, Lawrence F., R-Camden. Represents Camden and Rockport. Nash, 53, succeeds Rep. John S. McCormick Jr., R-Rockport, who left the Legislature to campaign in the Republican primary for Congress in the 1st District. Nash, who is starting his first term in the House, is a self-employed contractor and consultant. He has been a selectman and involved in municipal government and community activities for many years. He enjoys skiing.

District 84

Savage, Elmer N., R-Union. Represents Appleton, Hope, Jefferson, Liberty, Palermo, Somerville, Union, Washington and Hibbert’s Gore. Savage, 67, succeeds Rep. Carol Allen, D-Washington, who did not seek re-election. A native of the town of Washington, Savage is a Navy veteran who was a town manager in Searsport and Camden for 17 years. He also was a selectman in Union for 17 years and he’s been treasurer of the Union Fair for 37 years. He is treasurer of the Maine State Fair Association and enjoys hunting and fishing.

District 85

* Parent, Paul, R-Benton. Represents Albion, Benton, China and part of Winslow. Parent, 58, is starting his fifth term in the House. He has served on the Agriculture Committee all of his eight years in the Legislature. Parent is a retired chairman of the social-studies department at Lawrence High School in Fairfield. He holds a bachelor’s degree in government and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Connecticut. He graduated from Van Buren High School. From 1953 to 1955, Parent served in the Army in Germany in counter-intelligence. He has been active in the American Legion, VFW, the Grange, Lions Club and the Benton Republican Committee.

District 86

* Carter, Donald V., D-Winslow. Represents part of Winslow. Carter, 63, has served 24 years in the Legislature, including one term in the Senate. His seniority in the House is second only to House Speaker John L. Martin of Eagle Lake, who has 26 consecutive years of service. Carter has been House chairman of the Appropriations Committee for the last eight years. He owns and operates a general insurance agency. He earned a degree in history at Colby College and is a World War II veteran. Carter is a former first selectman in Winslow, and is president of the Friends of Fort Halifax and past president of the Winslow Lions Club. He is active in the VFW and DAV and enjoys hunting, fishing and golf.

District 87

Mitchell, Elizabeth H., D-Vassalboro. Represents Sidney, Vassalboro and Windsor. Mitchell, a former two-term House majority leader, returns to the Legislature after a six-year absence, succeeding Rep. Christine Burke, D-Vassalboro, who did not seek re-election. Mitchell, 50, served 10 years in the House before running as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 1982. She spent almost four years as executive director of the Maine State Housing Authority and ran for Congress in the 1st District Democratic primary in 1990, losing to Rep. Thomas Andrews. She is a South Carolina native and holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina.

District 88

* Daggett, Beverly C., D-Augusta. Represents part of Augusta. Daggett, 45, is a South Carolina native who holds a biology degree from Hillsdale College in Michigan and is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Maine. A former school-board member in Augusta, she is a director of FORUM-A, a regional arts organization. Daggett also is active in Augusta’s Crisis and Counseling Center, Green Street United Methodist Church and Mid-State United Cerebral Palsy Center.

District 89

* Paradis, Patrick E., D-Augusta. Represents part of Augusta. Paradis, 37, is starting his seventh term in the House. He has been House chairman of the Judiciary Committee for the last six years. He was the first non-lawyer in many years to serve in that capacity. Paradis, a graduate of St. Joseph Seminary in Bucksport and Framingham State College in Massachusetts, is a political-science instructor at the University of Maine at Augusta. He is active with the Maine Highway Safety Commission, Knights of Columbus and Le Club Calumet.

Lipman, Sumner, R-Augusta. Represents part of Augusta. Lipman, 49, defeated seven-term incumbent Rep. Daniel Hickey, D-Augusta, to win his first term in the House. Lipman is an attorney practicing in Augusta. He graduated from Cony High School and Boston University with a degree in business administration. He earned his law degree at Boston University School of Law.

* Farnsworth, Susan R., D-Hallowell Represents Chelsea, Hallowell and Pittston. Farnsworth, 43, is a lawyer and mediator with degrees from Bates College and the University of Maine School of Law. She was legal counsel for the state Office of Employee Relations from 1981 to 1987. Farnsworth also worked as an assistant attorney general with the state Department of Labor and was legal adviser for the state Division of Community Services. She serves on the boards of the Family Planning Association of Maine and the Kennebec Child Abuse and Neglect Council.

Treat, Sharon A., D-Gardiner. Represents Gardiner and part of Randolph. Treat, 34, upset Rep. Jean Dellert, R-Gardiner, to win her first term in the House. A Vermont native, she is a former lobbyist for the Natural Resources Council of Maine. Treat is a public-interest lawyer with degrees from Georgetown University Law Center and Princeton University. She is a member of the Volunteer Lawyer’s Project and the Gardiner Solid Waste Committee. She is on the board of the Maine People’s Resource Center and the Northeast Source Reduction Council.

District 93

* Marsh, John F., R-West Gardiner. Represents Farmingdale, Litchfield, West Gardiner and part of Randolph. Marsh, 48, is starting his second term in the House. He is retired from a career with the Maine Warden Service, including 15 years as a game warden and seven years as chief of the Warden Service. Marsh’s father, Maynard Marsh, also was a chief of the Maine Warden Service. Marsh is a certified Maine Guide. He is a graduate of Gorham High School and the University of Southern Maine. He operates a family-owned marina in Brunswick and also runs a tree farm in West Gardiner.

* Ault, Wendy L., R-Wayne. Represents Monmouth, Wayne and part of Winthrop. Ault, 34, is starting her second term in the House. She is assistant director of admissions at the University of Maine in Farmington. She is a graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel and Bates College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She serves on the school board in Wayne and is on the board of Kennebec Valley Medical Center in Augusta.

* Norton, Omar P., R-Winthrop. Represents Fayette, Manchester, Mount Vernon, Readfield and part of Winthrop. Norton, 57, is starting his third term in the House. He is a retired associate commissioner of the Department of Educational and Cultural Services. He also worked as a teacher and school superintendent. He graduated from Shead Memorial High School in Eastport and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a certificate of advanced study from the University of Maine. A U.S. Army veteran, Norton won a tryout with the Boston Braves baseball team in 1951.

Poulin, Thomas E., D-Oakland. Represents Oakland and part of Waterville. Poulin, 34, succeeds Rep. Bertram Marston, D-Oakland, who did not seek re-election. Poulin is a teacher at Messalonskee High School in Oakland and a small-business owner. He graduated from Messalonskee, Maine Maritime Academy and is studying for a degree in mathematics at the University of Maine at Farmington. He is a member of Oakland’s budget and recycling committees.

* Jacques, Paul F., D-Waterville. Represents part of Waterville. Jacques, 37, is starting his seventh term in the House. Jacques has been House chairman of the Fisheries and Wildlife Committee for six years and also has served on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee for several consecutive terms. Jacques is a Waterville High School graduate who is self-employed as a carpenter. He ran a grocery store for a number of years. He is chairman of the Waterville Housing Authority and on the advisory committee to Kennebec Valley Technical College. He is on the board of St. Francis de Sales Credit Union and is active in the Elks. He enjoys hunting, fishing and canoeing.

* Joseph, Ruth, D-Waterville. Represents part of Waterville. Joseph, 57, is starting her fifth term in the House. She was House chairman of the State and Local Government Committee for the last two years. She is a graduate of Waterville High School and the University of Maine. She is a former chairman of the Maine Commission for Women and also has been active with the National Commission for Women. She has been active with the Waterville Democratic City Committee, Mid-Maine Medical Center, the Maine Children’s Home and St. Joseph’s Maronite Catholic Church.

* Gwadosky, Dan A., D-Fairfield. Represents Smithfield, Fairfield and part of Skowhegan. Gwadosky, 36, is starting his second term as House majority leader. Starting his seventh House term, he served as assistant House majority leader before succeeding John Diamond of Bangor to become Democratic floor leader in 1988. A graduate of Lawrence High School and Thomas College, with a degree in management, he is corporate sales manager for Atrium Motels of Maine. Gwadosky has been active in the National Conference of State Legislatures and is chairman of the Fairfield Community Festival.

* Hepburn, Michael F., R-Skowhegan. Represents part of Skowhegan. Hepburn, 32, is starting his fourth term in the House. Hepburn is a lumber wholesaler who graduated from Skowhegan Area High School and earned a degree in nautical science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. He is a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Hepburn served on the SAD 54 board of directors before being elected to the Legislature. He is a corporator of Skowhegan Savings Bank and is active in the Lions, Elks and Jaycees.

Goodridge, Tracy R., D-Pittsfield. Represents Canaan, Cornville, Hartland and Pittsfield. Goodridge, 25, succeeds Rep. Patrick McGowan, D-Canaan, who held this seat for 10 years before stepping down to run for Congress in the 2nd District. Goodridge is a former staff member of the Maine Senate. She graduated from Maine Central Institute and earned a degree in political science at Bates College. She is in charge of programs and promotion for the First Universalist Church of Pittsfield.

Ketterer, Andrew, D-Norridgewock. Represents Madison, Norridgewock, Mercer and Starks. Ketterer, 41, succeeds five-term Rep. Alexander Richard, D-Madison, who did not seek re-election. A New Jersey native, Ketterer is a lawyer practicing with his own firm in Norridgewock. He holds a law degree from Northeastern University School of Law and an undergraduate degree from Connecticut College. He is chairman of the Madison Board of Appeals, president of the Somerset County Bar Association and active in the Maine Bar Association. He enjoys water-skiing and winter skiing.

* Rotondi, Dorothy A., D-Athens. Represents Anson, Athens, Bingham, Caratunk, Jackman, Moose River, Moscow, Solon, and the plantations of Brighton, Dennistown, Highland, Pleasant Ridge, The Forks and West Forks, plus unorganized territories. Rotondi, 32, is starting her fifth term in the House. She is a graduate of Madison High School who studied at the University of Maine at Augusta and has worked as a teacher aide. She has been chairman of the Somerset County legislative delegation and chairman of the Athens Democratic Committee. She belongs to the National Rifle Association, the National Muzzle-Loading Rifle Association, Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, the Maine Bowhunters Association and the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

* Gould, Richard A., D-Greenville. Gould, 56, is starting his third term in the House. He is a woodsman who earned a bachelor’s degree from Farmington State Teachers College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Hussey, 41, is starting his third term in the House. He is a papermaker at Georgia-Pacific’s Millinocket mill. He graduated from Milo High School and studied at Husson College in Bangor. He is a past member of the ambulance service and firemen’s association in Milo. He has been active in Masons and the United Methodist Church. He enjoys playing golf and is golf coach at Penquis Valley High School in Milo.

* Merrill, Kathryn D., R-Dover-Foxcroft. Represents Atkinson, Garland, Guilford, Dover-Foxcroft and Sebec. Merrill is starting her second term in the House. A lifelong Dover-Foxcroft resident, she has operated a gift shop and antique business and worked as a real-estate broker. Merrill served three years on the Dover-Foxcroft Board of Selectmen and was the first woman elected to that board. She is a graduate of Foxcroft Academy who studied at EMVTI and Husson College. She has been active in Church Women United, the Older Americans Center, the Church of the Nazarene, VFW and the Chamber of Commerce. She enjoys tole painting and gardening.

Reed, William F., R-Dexter. Represents Dexter, Corinna and St. Albans. Reed, 65, was elected to this seat previously held by the late Rep. Weston R. Sherburne, R-Dexter. Reed is a retired retailer who now works as a real-estate agent. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and Becker Business College. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He is active in the Dexter Kiwanis Club and enjoys golf, flying and boating.

* Tardy, Robert J., D-Palmyra. Represents Detroit, Etna, Newport, Palmyra, Plymouth and Troy. Tardy, 46, is starting his fourth term in the House. He has been House chairman of the Agriculture Committee for four years. A Mississippi native, he runs a John Deere equipment dealership in Newport. He graduated from Newport High School and earned an education degree from the University of Maine. He served 12 years as a selectman in Palmyra.

* Stevenson, Madeline D., R-Unity. Represents Monroe, Jackson, Thorndike, Unity, Unity Township, Freedom, Burnham and Clinton. Stevenson is starting her second full term in the House after succeeding her late husband, Rep. Dana Stevenson, in a special election in 1988. Stevenson, 64, is a retired teacher. She graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine. She has been active in 4-H work, church work, the Waldo County Law Enforcement Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Women’s Legislative Council. She enjoys gardening, golf, cross-country skiing and her grandchildren.

* Whitcomb, Walter E., R-Waldo. Represents Belmont, Brooks, Islesboro, Knox, Lincolnville, Montville, Morrill, Searsmont, Swanville and Waldo. Whitcomb, 38, was elected House minority leader for the 115th Maine Legislature at the start of his fourth House term. He is a dairy farmer who graduated from Mount View High School in Thorndike and earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science at the University of Maine. He has been a selectman in the town of Waldo and a state director in the Maine Farm Bureau and is active in the Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District.

* Marsano, Francis C., R-Belfast. Represents Belfast and Northport. Marsano, 54, is assistant House minority leader. He is an attorney who graduated from North Quincy (Mass.) High School, Bowdoin College, and the University of Michigan Law School. He was an Army captain in artillery from 1958 to 1965. He is past president of the Maine State Bar Association, the Waldo County YMCA and the Northport Golf Club. He is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Bar and a fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. He has been a director of the Penobscot Marine Museum and of Waldo County General Hospital.

* Crowley, Nathaniel J., Sr., D-Stockton Springs. Represents Winterport, Frankfort, Prospect, Stockton Springs and Searsport. Crowley, 73, is starting his sixth term in the House. In the last Legislature, he was House chairman of the Education Committee. Crowley is a retired dean of students at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine. He was a successful football, basketball and baseball coach at several Maine high schools during his teaching career, and has been inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Italy during World War II. He has served on the Education Commission of the States and as vice chairman of the New England Board of Higher Education. Crowley also has served on the executive committee of the Maineport Council, planning the cargo-port project at Sears Island.

* Richards, John H., R-Hampden. Represents Hampden, Newburgh and Dixmont. Richards, 40, is starting his second term in the House. A New Jersey native, he graduated from Bergenfield (N.J.) High School and the University of Maine before earning a law degree at Texas Southern University. He served in the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1972. Richards has been active in the Hampden Track and Field Club, The Athletic Congress and as a coach for the Hampden Recreation Department.

* Strout, Donald A., R-East Corinth. Represents Exeter, Corinth, Stetson, Levant, Kenduskeag and Carmel. Strout, 53, is starting his tenth term and is the most senior Republican in the House. He is town manager in Corinth and a former wholesale footwear salesman. He graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston and studied at Husson College in Bangor. Strout was a selectman for several years in Corinth and has been president of the Corinth Housing Corp. He has been town clerk in Corinth since 1979. He also belongs to the town’s fire department and ambulance service and is active in the Maine Municipal Association, Masons and Eastern Star.

* Lebowitz, Catharine Koch, R-Bangor. Represents Glenburn, Hermon and part of Bangor. Lebowitz, 75, is starting her fifth term in the House. She is retired from a career as court clerk in U.S. District Court. Born in Winchester, Mass., she graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast and studied at Boston University and Northeastern University. She has served on the Bangor City Council. She is active in Bangor Community Theater, Bangor Area Chamber of Commerce, and Community Health and Counseling. She also is active in the Miss Maine Pageant and and Bangor Symphony Women. She is on the planning board of St. Joseph Hospital. She enjoys growing roses.

* Duffy, Thomas A., D-Bangor. Represents part of Bangor. Duffy, 44, is starting his fourth term in the House. For the last several years, he’s been active on two committees — Fisheries and Wildlife and Taxation. A Bangor native, he graduated from John Bapst High School and studied at the University of Maine. He is a member of the Maine Air National Guard. Duffy is self-employed and is a licensed real-estate broker. He is current chairman of the Penobscot County legislative delegation. He belongs to the Bangor Lions Club and Penobscot Salmon Club. He enjoys hunting and fishing.

* Stevens, Patricia M., D-Bangor. Represents part of Bangor. Stevens, 48, is starting her fifth term in the House. She is an attorney who recently earned her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law. * Garland, Joseph A., R-Bangor. Represents part of Bangor. Garland, 31, is starting his third term in the House, having won a three-way contest for his seat in 1990. He has served on the Banking and Insurance Committee for four years. Garland is vice president of General Distributing Corp., a family-owned business in Bangor. Morrison, Hugh A., R-Bangor. Represents part of Bangor. Morrison upset Rep. Everett O. Pederson, D-Bangor, to win his first term in the House. Morrison is a retired airline pilot for Pan American World Airways. He has served 33 years with the U.S. Air Force, Maine Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves. A Bangor High School graduate, he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching from the University of Maine. He is a trustee of the Bangor Water District and the Good Samaritan Agency. His hobbies include woodworking, whitewater rafting and fishing.

* Ruhlin, Richard P., D-Brewer. Represents part of Brewer. Ruhlin, 54, is starting his fourth term in the House. He has served on the Labor and the Marine Resources committees for several terms. He is co-owner of a dental supply business. A Bangor High School graduate, Ruhlin attended the University of Maine and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin. He has served in the Maine Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve. He has served on the Brewer City Council and been mayor of Brewer. He has been active in the National Ski Patrol and Friends of the Penobscot River. He is past chairman of the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross and has been active in United Way.

* Tupper, Helen M., R-Orrington. Represents Holden, Orrington and part of Brewer. Tupper, 64, is starting her third term in the House. She is a retired city assessor of Brewer. She attended Portland High School and the Massachusetts School of Physiotherapy. Tupper is past president of the Maine Association of Assessing Officers and is president of the Orrington Garden Club and co-chairman of the town’s bicentennial observance. She is a past chairman of the Orrington Planning Board. Her hobbies include antiques, gardening and oil painting.

* Swazey, E. Michael, D-Bucksport. Represents Bucksport, Orland, Verona and Dedham. Swazey, 35, is starting his fourth term in the House. In his last three terms, he served on the Taxation Committee. Swazey is employed as a beekeeper and a firefighter. He graduated from Bucksport High School and studied journalism at the University of Maine. He is a director of the Bucksport Regional Health Center.

Gray, Glenith C., D-Sedgwick. Represents Stonington, Deer Isle, Castine, Brooklin, Brooksville, Isle Au Haut, Sedgwick and Penobscot. Gray, 42, upset Rep. Sherman Hutchins, R-Penobscot, in November. She is a landscape gardener. Gray graduated from West High School in Bremerton, Wash., and studied at Husson College in Bangor. She has been a selectman, assistant town clerk and assistant registrar of voters in Sedgwick. She is on the town’s comprehensive plan committee and budget committee. She organized the Hancock County campaigns of Sen. George J. Mitchell and gubernatorial candidate Joseph E. Brennan in 1990. She has been active on the Hancock County Democratic Committee and the Eastern Area Agency on Aging and is a trustee of the Sargentville Library.

* Carroll, John H., R-Southwest Harbor. Represents Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Tremont, Lamoine, Trenton, Frenchboro, Swan’s Island and the Cranberry Isles. Carroll, 53, is starting his second term in the House. He is retired from a career with the Maine Marine Patrol. He is a graduate of Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor and Maine Central Institute and he studied at Boston University. He was police chief in Southwest Harbor for four years and police chief in Thomaston for one year.

* Constantine, Virginia, D-Bar Harbor. Represents Bar Harbor, Gouldsboro, Winter Harbor and Steuben. Constantine is starting her second House term after upsetting Rep. Roland S. Salsbury Jr., R-Bar Harbor, in 1988. Constantine, 41, runs an antique clothing and jewelry business. She earned a degree in biology from the University of Connecticut. She has been vice chairman of the Bar Harbor Planning Board and chairman of the Hancock County Extension Association. She has been a member of the Bar Harbor Committee 2000 and the Affordable Housing Task Force.

* Farren, Frank H., Jr., R-Cherryfield. Represents Franklin, Hancock, Sullivan, Sorrento, Cherryfield, Addison, Harrington and Milbridge, plus unorganized territories. Farren, 55, is starting his third term in the House. He is a field supervisor in the blueberry industry. He is a graduate of Cherryfield Academy who studied at the University of Maine at Augusta and with LaSalle Extension University. He is a U.S. Army veteran. He has been active in the Maine Snowmobile Association and the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club. He is a trustee of Cherryfield Academy who enjoys many outdoor activities.

Salisbury, Deale B., R-Ellsworth. Represents Ellsworth, Blue Hill and Surry. Salisbury, 57, succeeds Rep. Ruth Foster, R-Ellsworth, who moved up to the Senate. Salisbury is a retired teacher with degrees from the University of Maine and Ellsworth High School. He also studied at Bangor Theological Seminary. He is chairman of the Ellsworth Historical Society, a member of the Ellsworth School Committee and active with the Hancock County Bicentennial. His interests include history, genealogy and collecting and he has traveled extensively.

Duplessis, Susan Dubay, R-Old Town. Represents Amherst, Aurora, Eastbrook, Great Pond, Mariaville, Osborn, Otis, Waltham, Alton, Bradley, Greenfield, Milton and part of Old Town, plus unorganized territory. Duplessis, 34, succeeds six-term Rep. Eugene Paradis, R-Old Town, who was defeated in a bid for the Senate. She is a registered nurse who graduated from John Bapst High School and the University of Southern Maine. She is a member of the Old Town City Council and the Old Town Sesquicentennial Committee. She was the first woman to be elected president of the Old Town Jaycees.

* Cathcart, Mary R., D-Orono. Represents Clifton, Eddington, Veazie and part of Orono. Cathcart, 48, is starting her second term in the House. She was formerly an advocate for battered women and their children. She graduated from Indianola (Miss.) High School and Rhodes College in Tennessee. She serves on the Orono Planning Board and is a past chairman of the Maine Commission for Women. She is on the board of the Eastern Maine AIDS Network and is organist at St. James Episcopal Church in Old Town. She is active on the University of Maine Council on Women. She enjoys swimming and windsurfing.

* O’Dea, John, D-Orono. Represents part of Orono. O’Dea, 25, is starting his second term in the House. He is a Caribou High School graduate who is currently studying at the University of Maine. He is employed in the aquaculture business. O’Dea has been vice president of the student body at the University of Maine and also president of the Student Senate. His hobbies include skiing, running and dog training.

* Cashman, John A., D-Old Town. Represents Indian Island Voting District and part of Old Town. Cashman, 40, is starting his fifth term in the House. He has been House chairman of the Taxation Committee for several years. He owns Cashman Associates, a real estate and insurance business in Bangor. He graduated from John Bapst High School and earned a degree in public administration from the University of Maine. He formerly served on the Old Town City Council for six years and was president of the council for two years.

* Hichborn, Clyde A., D-LaGrange. Represents Burlington, Edinburg, Enfield, Greenbush, Howland, LaGrange, Lakeville, Lee, Lowell, Passadumkeag, Springfield, Argyle and Summit Townships, Carroll Plantation, plus unorganized territory. Hichborn, 80, is starting his sixth term in the House. He also served one term in the Senate. He worked in education for 35 years and then ran a general store in LaGrange. He was town manager and school superintendent in Howland, and the Hichborn Middle School in Howland was named in honor of him and his wife, Winona. He graduated from Higgins Classical Institute and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Maine. Hichborn served four years in the Army, including two years during World War II. Hichborn has been a selectman and school committee member in LaGrange.

* Cahill, Mary F., D-Mattawamkeag. Represents Lincoln, Winn, Mattawamkeag, Kingman Township, and the plantations of Webster, Drew, Macwahoc and Prentiss. Cahill is starting her first full term after succeeding her father, the late Rep. Thomas Cahill, D-Mattawamkeag, in a special election in 1989. Cahill, 25, is an elementary-school teacher. She graduated from Mattanawcook Academy and the University of Maine.

Michaud, 35, is starting his sixth term in the House. He has been House chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee for four years. A graduate of Schenck High School, Michaud is a paper finisher for Georgia-Pacific Corp. in East Millinocket. He is a former vice president of Local 152 of the UPIU. Clark has worked 25 years as a pipefitter at Georgia-Pacific Corp.’s Millinocket mill. He is a graduate of Stearns High School who studied at the University of Maine at Orono. He served with the Army in Vietnam. He is president of the Stearns Alumni Club and active in the Knights of Columbus, the Fin and Feather Club, the Northern Timber Cruisers and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

* Look, Theone F., R-Jonesboro. Represents Beals, Centerville, Columbia, Columbia Falls, East Machias, Jonesboro, Jonesport, Machias, Roque Bluffs and Whitneyville. Look, 66, is starting her third term in the House. She is a bookkeeper who was town clerk and town treasurer of Jonesboro for many years and has been chairman of the Washington County commissioners. She is active in the Jonesboro Union Church, Jonesboro Grange and Order of the Eastern Star. She is a past president of the Maine County Commissioners Association. She has served on the Jonesboro Planning Board and the Washington County Planning Commission. Her hobbies include photography and flying.

* Townsend, George A., D-Eastport. Represents Cutler, Eastport, Lubec, Machiasport, Marshfield, Pleasant Point, and Whiting, plus unorganized territories. He is a graduate of Shead Memorial High School and Washington County Technical College. He has been president of the Eastport City Council and has served on the Eastport Port Authority. Townsend also has been active in the Quoddy Opportunity Zone. He was chairman of Eastport Port Days for eight years.

District 138

* Tammaro, Antonio J., D-Woodland. Represents Alexander, Baileyville, Calais, Meddybemps and Baring Plantation. Tammaro, 73, is starting his fifth term in the House. He has served on the Labor Committee for several terms. Tammaro is retired from a career at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Woodland. He was a well-known high-school basketball referee in eastern Maine for many years.

District 139

Bailey, Harry, R-Grand Lake Stream.* Moholland, Fred W., D-Princeton. Represents Bancroft, Haynesville, Orient, Weston, Beddington, Charlotte, Cooper, Crawford, Danforth, Deblois, Dennysville, Indian Township Voting District, Northfield, Pembroke, Perry, Princeton, Robbinston, Talmadge, Topsfield, Vanceboro, Waite, Wesley and the plantations of Codyville, Reed and Grand Lake Stream, plus unorganized territories. Bailey, 49, upset five-term incumbent Rep. Fred Moholland, D-Princeton, to win his first term in the House. Bailey is a retired Maine state trooper who runs a private security business. He graduated from Princeton High School and the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran and a registered Maine Guide. He is active in the Masons and the Shrine and a member of the Governor’s Highway Safety Commission.

District 140

Bowers, Rodney V., R-Sherman Mills. Represents Amity, Crystal, Dyer Brook, Hammond, Hersey, Hodgdon, Island Falls, Linneus, Ludlow, Merrill, New Limerick, Oakfield, Sherman, Smyrna, and the plantations of Cary, Glenwood and Moro, plus unorganized territory. Bowers, 69, upset five-term Rep. Carl Smith, D-Island Falls, in November. He is a retired funeral director and a World War II veteran. Bowers has served on the school board and hospital board. He is a hunter-safety instructor whose hobbies include hunting, fishing, skiing and snowmobiling.

District 141

* Graham, Nason S., D-Houlton. Represents Houlton and Littleton. Graham, 32, is starting his second term in the House. He runs an antique-auto restoration business and a general store. A Houlton native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political studies from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He is studying for a master’s degree in public administration. He served four years in the U.S. Navy where he was a Russian linguist and cryptographer. Graham has served on the Houlton Town Council and Houlton Budget Committee. He is active in the Elks and the Maine Obsolete Auto League. He enjoys canoeing, fishing and hunting.

District 142

* MacBride, Mary H., R-Presque Isle. Represents Blaine, Bridgewater, Monticello, Westfield, E Plantation and part of Presque Isle. MacBride, 74, is starting her seventh term in the House. She is a homemaker and former teacher. She worked in a potato-farming operation for 25 years and now runs an apartment house. MacBride was born in Blaine and graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill. She earned an English degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. She is on the boards of Northern Maine Technical College, the Aroostook Medical Center and the Aroostook Division of the American Cancer Society. She enjoys golf, swimming, travel and bridge.

District 143

Donnelly, James, R-Presque Isle. Represents parts of Mapleton and Presque Isle. Donnelly, 23, succeeds 10-year Rep. John Lisnik, D-Presque Isle, whose name was dropped from the ballot after he won less than the minimum 25 votes in the June primary. A Queens, N.Y., native, Donnelly works as a car salesman. He graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle and is now pursuing a master’s degree at UMPI. He has worked for the Special Olympics, Aroostook United Way and Opportunity Training Center. He is active in Knights of Columbus and was president of Kappa Delta Phi fraternity in college.

District 144

* Mahany, B. Carolyne T., D-Easton. Represents Easton, Fort Fairfield and Mars Hill. Mahany, 57, is starting her fourth term in the House. A part-time college teacher, Mahany graduated from Easton High School, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine and did advanced graduate study at Boston College. She served in the Marine Corps and studied at the Institute for European History and Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and the Institute for Ecumenical Research at Tuebingen, Germany. She also taught in Germany. She won a special 1983 election to complete the term of her father, the late Rep. Luman Mahany.

District 145

* Pines, Susan J., R-Limestone. Represents part of Limestone. Pines, 65, is an inactive registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for 31 years and now is starting her sixth term in the House. She graduated from high school in Hagerstown, Md., then earned a degree from Washington County Hospital School of Nursing and did postgraduate work at Cornell University School of Nursing. She is a board member of Northern Maine Alternatives and an associate-degree nursing adviser to Northern Maine Technical College.

District 146

* Bell, Wilfred J., D-Caribou. Represents part of Caribou. Bell, 63, is starting his second House term after upsetting five-term Rep. Kenneth L. Matthews, R-Caribou, in 1988. After working 43 years in the grocery business, 33 years as a supermarket manager, Bell now works in advertising. A Caribou High School graduate, he was mayor of Caribou for three years and has served on the Caribou City Council for 16 years. He is past president of the Aroostook Municipal Association and a past member of the Maine Municipal Association’s executive committee. He also is past president of the Caribou Chamber of Commerce, United Fund and Kiwanis Club.

District 147

* Anderson, Malachi, R-Caribou. Represents Washburn, Woodland, Mapleton and part of Caribou. Anderson, 59, is starting his third term in the House. In his first two terms, he served on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Anderson is a heavy-equipment contractor who graduated from Caribou High School. From 1954 to 1956, he served in the U.S. Army.

District 148

* Martin, Hilda C., D-Van Buren. Represents Connor, Hamlin, New Sweden, Stockholm, Van Buren, Caswell and Cyr Plantations, part of Limestone, and unorganized territories. Martin, 56, is starting her sixth term in the House. She works as an independent real estate broker. Martin graduated from Mount Ida Junior College in Newton, Mass., which recognized her with its Outstanding Alumni Award, and studied at the University of Maine. She has served on the boards of Aroostook County CAP and Northern Maine Alternatives and is active in Van Buren BPW and the American Legion Auxiliary.

District 149

* McHenry, Edward A., D-Madawaska. Represents Grand Isle, Madawaska, Perham, Wade, Westmanland and unorganized territories. McHenry, 50, is a paper-mill worker at Fraser Paper Ltd. in Madawaska. He has served 16 years in the House and is embarking on his ninth term. He has been House chairman of the Labor Committee for several terms and has been at the center of several major debates over labor bills in recent years. McHenry graduated from Madawaska High School.

District 150

* Paradis, Judy A., D-Frenchville. Represents Fort Kent, Frenchville and St. Agatha. Starting her third House term, Paradis, 46, was named to the Appropriations Committee for the 115th Legislature. She is a high-school French teacher who graduated from St. Agatha High School and earned a degree at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. She serves on the Democratic State Committee and is chairman of both the Frenchville Democratic Committee and the St. John Valley Democratic Association. She won a Distinguished Legislator Award from the National Conference of State Legislatures in 1990. She is on the state board of Parents Anonymous. She writes a weekly column of political news for the St. John Valley Times and is active in many other groups.

District 151

* Martin, John L., D-Eagle Lake. Represents Allagash, Ashland, Castle Hill, Chapman, Eagle Lake, Masardis, New Canada, Portage Lake, St. Francis, the plantations of Garfield, Nashville, Oxbow, St. John, Wallagrass and Winterville, plus 82 unorganized territories. Martin, 49, has been elected to a ninth consecutive term as speaker of the House, by far the longest tenure of any House speaker in the history of the Maine Legislature. Only one other House speaker in the nation has equal service. He has served 26 years in the House, also the longest service of any current legislator, and is embarking on his 14th term. Martin also is serving as president of the National Conference of State Legislatures. He graduated from Fort Kent High School and the University of Maine, where he also did graduate work. He teaches political-science courses at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. He has been active in regional and national legislative organizations including the International Association of French-Speaking Parliamentarians. He is treasurer of Northern Maine General Hospital, president of Ambulance Services Inc. in Fort Kent and treasurer of the Eagle Lake Water and Sewer District.
