“Employment Concerns” will be the topic of the Small Business Seminar to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the conference room of the Penobscot County Cooperative Extension office, 105 Hammond St., Court House Annex, Bangor.

Extension Educator Herbert H. Zeichick, organizer of the program, states: “This seminar is designed to provide small business owners and managers, and those thinking of starting up, with an overview of important information relating to complying with basic state and federal laws, rules and regulations covering employment and employer obligations.”

Some of the topics to be covered are: Compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986; Who is an Employee vs. and Independent Contractor; Unemployment Insurance Taxes; Federal Employment Taxes; Maine Employment Taxes; Withholding and Depositing Taxes; Social Security; Hiring the “Right” Employee; Unemployment Insurance Claims; Workers’ Compensation; Minimum Wages; Overtime and Child Labor Laws.

The information will be presented by representatives from the following agencies: U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Maine Bureau of Employment Security, Maine Bureau of Taxation, U.S. Social Security Administration, UM Cooperative Extension, Workers’ Compensation Commission and the Maine Department of Labor. The presenters also will describe the kinds of information available from their agencies and how to get it.

Zeichick goes on to emphasize: “The program is open to all interested persons without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or handicap. The room is accessible to the handicapped. No admission fee will be charged.”
