Hodgdon Hawks slip by East Grand

DANFORTH – Avon Stewart scored 18 points to help fuel a Hodgdon comeback and key the Hawks to a 67-64 victory over host East Grand in schoolboy basketball action here Wednesday.

For the 6-9 Hawks, Jason Langley had 13 points and Mike Cain added 11. The Hawks erased a third-quarter deficit to get the win.

Eric Gilman scored 27 points to pace the 9-6 Vikings. James Kendall had 12 points and Rodger Dow added 10.

At Houlton, Courtney Tilley’s free throw with no time remaining on the clock gave the Houlton girls their eighth straight win and 14th in 16 games this season.

Tilley was fouled when trying to take a 15-foot jump shot and ended the game by sinking the first foul shot.

Liz Nelson had a game-high 19 points and 16 rebounds and Tilley finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Stephanie Swallow scored 14 points for the winners and Kim Doll contributed 10.

Kristi St. Peter had a team-high 14 points for 8-5 Caribou, Maggie Watson scored nine points and Darcy McElwee accounted for eight points and eight rebounds. Charity McNeal also grabbed eight rebounds for Caribou.

Riots tip Schenck by 82-74

ORONO – Jon Hume scored a game-high 25 points and Scott Ismail netted seven of his 16 points in the decisive third period as the Orono High School Red Riots won their 12th straight, 82-74 over Schenck High of East Millinocket here Wednesday evening.

Orono is now 14-1 while Schenck slipped to 7-8.

Ismail’s 7 points, Hume’s 6 and Jamie Beaudoin’s 5 points in the third period enabled the Riots to turn a 44-42 halftime deficit into a 60-54 lead entering the final period and the Riots led the rest of the way.

Beaudon finished with 13 points while Jay Vetelino and Mark Smith tossed in 12 apiece. Vetelino also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Guy Ordway had 16 points for Schenck, which went 22-for-24 from the foul line. Mike Hamm scored 14 points and Joey Gagnon netted 13 more.
