Unbeaten swim teams clash

The undefeated Old Town Indian High girls travel to Bangor Friday to visit Jim Willis’ undefeated Ram squad in a 6 p.m. meet at the Husson pool.

Doug Springer’s Indians encounter a Ram team comprised of talented front-line racers and team depth. Bangor, frankly, has not been challenged as a team this season and will be seeking to close the dual meet season with a victory.

“Bangor has too many front line people but there are some events where we may see some matchups. All our girls have shown dramatic improvement and we want to continue our steady progression to the state meet,” Springer –

David Ploch and his undefeated Old Town High male swimmers and divers host Bangor High School Saturday at 2 p.m. in the final dual-meet action of the season for both squads.

Old Town, the defending Class B state champion and winner of this season’s PVC Relay Carnival, will be racing a Ram squad that has its sights set on defending the 1989-90 state Class A swim title.

Ploch’s boys, presently riding a 10-0 dual-meet record, will be seeking to give Old Town swimming its first dual-meet win over Bangor High School since 1979.

“Bangor has come an incredible way since December. Phil (Emery) has done a great job. He always does a great job, but this year his kids have come so far,” Ploch said.

“It will be an exciting meet. We haven’t been tested in a six-lane pool. We will need to score our third swimmers in each event and our `B’ relays need to really perform. We want to win, but we also want to get ready for the state meet in a couple of weeks,” he continued.

Ploch indicated that neither team appears to have a clear advantage in the depth area. “We have some areas where we have an advantage and Bangor has areas where they have an advantage. Every point is critical. I do not see any event that will not be raced. All swimmers will be under state cuts.”

Bangor mentor Emery acknowledged the punch of the Indians. “They can cover every event up front with a good solid swimmer. We love the rivalry. It’s always healthy and Dave does a great job. This meet is important, but our primary concern is the state championship. We have no choice; we have to be ready for the state meet.” –

Princeton University’s Div. I swim squad next season will include Mount Desert Island talent Bruce Crock. Crock, who holds all MDI individual swimming records, has been notified that he received an early decision admission to the Ivy League school.

The Tigers, coached by Olympic medalholder Rob Orr, are ranked among the nation’s top 20 swim teams. Crock, who has excelled in all events in Maine competition, primarily anticipates further breaststroke racing development as a Tiger. –
