Winterport JHS boys advance

WINTERPORT – Winterport earned a spot in Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Junior High League basketball tournament with a 42-21 victory over the Milford boys here Wednesday.

Bucksport boys edge Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH – Richard Foley sank two free throws with just under a minute remaining to lift the Bucksport High freshmen basketball team to a 64-63 victory over Ellsworth Wednesday. Peter Kenny led Bucksport with 15 points. Brad Hurd and David Huntington added 12 points apiece for the 8-9 Golden Bucks. For the Eagles, now 14-5, Josh Hill scored 23 points and Dana Hodgkins and Mark Merritt chipped in with 11 points each.

Schenck wins Penquis championship

EAST MILLINOCKET – The Schenck Wolverines used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 74-51 for the Penquis League freshman boys basketball title Wednesday. Schenck advanced to Saturday’s regional tourney at Brewer High. Jeremy Deveau paced the 11-1 winners with 21 points, Chris Hale added 15, and Mark Farmer netted 14. Chris Merritt and Jared Stanley each chipped in with 10 points. John Moore paced 11-5 Foxcroft with 25 points.

Nokomis frosh tops Piscataquis

GUILFORD – Dan Erskine scored 15 points to lead the Nokomis boys freshmen basketball team to a 68-52 victory over Piscataquis Wednesday. Brad Curtis and John Cole added 14 points apiece for the 10-7 Warriors. For the Pirates, now 5-9, Adam Shearer scored 22 points and Matt Thomas added 10.

Greenbush defeats Airline

INDIAN ISLAND – Gary Shurn scored 30 points to lead Greenbush Junior High past the Airline School of Aurora 42-25 in a first round Mid-Maine Junior High League Tournament game Wednesday. Ricky Miles and Jeff Pelkey added 6 points apiece for 2-12 Greenbush. For Airline, 1-14, Kirk Doyle scored 10 points.

Dedham edges St. Mary’s

INDIAN ISLAND – Ben Zaitz scored 13 points to lead Dedham Junior High to a 41-40 Mid-Maine Junior High League Tournament victory over St. Mary’s School of Bangor Wednesday. Jeff Hardy added 12 points for 12-5 Dedham. Norman Laukes scored 16 points for 13-6 St. Mary’s.
