Two teams which watched the Eastern Maine Class A schoolgirl basketball tournament either from the bleachers or on television last year headline the eight squads which have qualified for the 1991 event.

Lawrence of Fairfield and Stearns of Millinocket have earned the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, for the Class A tournament, which begins Saturday at the Bangor Auditorium. The final, official Maine Secondary School Principals’ Association Heal Points were released over the weekend.

The 16-2 Bulldogs and the 14-4 Minutemen appear ready to make a serious challenge at three-time defending regional champion Cony of Augusta, which took the No. 3 seed with a 15-3 record. Lawrence defeated Cony twice on the regular season.

Coach Bruce Cooper’s Lawrence squad locked up the No. 1 seed after having finished more than nine points out of eighth place a year ago. Freshman guard Cindy Blodgett has been the catalyst for the Bulldogs, who also look to seniors Dawn Anne Higgins, Mary Hamlin, and Airami Bogle.

Stearns, under veteran coach Jerry Burleigh, earned the second seed after a ninth-place finish in 1990. The Minutemen boast senior guard Seana Dionne and sophomore forward Trisha Ripton, along with senior Sandra Jewers and Jessi Beadnell.

Cony, making its ninth consecutive trip to the EM tournament, returns with a veteran nucleus which includes seniors Lisa Samson and Angela Nadeau, junior Chrisann Burns, and sophomores Anna Nadeau and Alyssa Farrell.

In EM schoolgirl pairings, Lawrence plays No. 8 Skowhegan (10-8), Stearns faces No. 7 Winslow (11-7), third-seeded Cony awaits No. 6 Bangor (11-7), and No. 4 Hampden Academy (14-4) draws No. 5 Old Town (14-4).

Defending state champion Lawrence (16-2) is also the top seed in the EM Class A boys tourney. The Bulldogs will play No. 8 Mt. Blue of Farmington (11-7). In other matchups, No. 2 Old Town (15-3) faces No. 7 Presque Isle (12-6), third-seeded Bangor (13-5) meets No. 6 Stearns (13-5), and No. 4 Waterville (11-7) takes on No. 5 Caribou (12-6).

Western Maine Boys: Two preliminary games are scheduled for Tuesday as No. 10 Bonny Eagle of West Buxton (10-8) travels to No. 7 Biddeford (11-7) and No. 9 Oxford Hills of South Paris (12-6) visits No. 8 Cheverus of Portland (10-8). Biddeford and Cheverus finished tied in the Heal Points, but Biddeford was awarded the No. 7 seed after a coin toss.

In quarterfinal action, No. 1 Morse of Bath (16-2) and No. 2 Deering of Portland (14-4) await the prelim winners. Third-seeded Portland (13-5) plays No. 6 Kennebunk (11-7) and No. 4 Lewiston (14-4) faces No. 5 South Portland (12-6).

Western Maine Girls: Preliminaries are slated for Wednesday as No. 7 Oxford Hills (11-7) hosts No. 10 Deering (8-10) and No. 8 McAuley of Portland (8-10) entertains No. 9 Lewiston (9-9). McAuley and Lewiston finished tied in the Heal Points, but McAuley was awarded the No. 8 seed after a coin toss.

Top-seeded Westbrook (15-3) and No. 2 Portland (14-4) must wait for the outcomes of the prelims. Third-seeded South Portland (14-4) goes against No. 6 Noble of Berwick (14-4) and No. 4 Edward Little of Auburn (15-3) meets No. 5 Kennebunk (15-3).
