ORONO — Cmdr. Lewis J. Buckley, conductor of the U.S. Coast Guard Band, will be guest conductor at a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the University of Maine.

Buckley will conduct the university’s Symphonic Band and the Hampden Academy Concert Band separately and together at Hutchins Concert Hall, Maine Center for the Arts.

Buckley is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and holds a bachelor’s degree in music. He received a master’s degree in 1971 from Connecticut College. He joined the Coast Guard in 1969 as a musician first class and was named director of the band in 1974. He was the youngest person ever to head a premier service band when he was commissioned at the age of 27.
