Baker, Buswell, Mattson All-Tourney repeaters

Matt Baker of Washburn, who set a Class D single-game scoring record with 46 points in the semifinals, headlines the list of 16 players selected to the 1991 Eastern Maine All-Tournament Team for Classes B, C and D.

Baker, a senior center, was one of only three repeat choices and also was a unanimous pick by the extensive panel of media representatives, tournament officials and tournament committee members who participated in the voting.

Jamie Beaudoin of Orono and Hermon’s Shawn Thayer were listed on all Class B ballots, while Chad Fitzsimmons of Washington Academy in East Machias was a unanimous pick in Class C.

Rod Buswell of John Bapst of Bangor and Matt Mattson of George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill join Baker as the three repeat picks from last year’s All-Tourney squad.

Darren Whitney of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, Orono’s Scott Ismail and Ralph Hirtle of Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield round out the Class B team, while Matt Cassidy and Derek Clark of EM champion Calais and Garth Hudson of Sumner in East Sullivan were tabbled for the Class C squad.

The Class D team also includes Bill Mathers and Jay Burpee of Class D titlist Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook, Machias’ Ryan Schoppee and Eric Gilman of East Grand of Danforth.

Beaudoin was a catalyst for the Red Riots at point guard. The 5-foot-11 junior averaged 13 points, directing Orono’s offensive attack and playing tough defense on top of the 2-3 zone.

Thayer, a 5-9 senior guard, finished as the leading scorer in the tournament with 83 points (27.7 ppg). He was virtually unstoppable offensively and also turned in a tireless defensive effort.

Whitney showed why he is one of Class B’s best all-around performers while keying the Lynx. The versatile 6-4 senior forward averaged 26.5 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

Ismail (6-3 senior center) was Orono’s go-to guy in the middle as the Riots opted for a more patient half-court attack. His poise and muscle underneath helped him provide 18 points and 8 rebounds per game.

Hirtle helped carry MCI into the semifinals with his strong inside play. The 6-5 senior center sparked the Huskies, averaging 11.5 points and 6 rebounds.

Fitzsimmons, a 6-foot senior forward, scored almost at will for the Raiders. His elusive moves on the baseline and in the lane helped him average 27 points and 9 rebounds while leading WA into the regional final.

Cassidy made sure Calais started strong in the first half with his smooth scoring touch. The 6-1 junior guard connected for 20 points a game to help lead the Blue Devils to the title.

Buswell was a relentless two-way player for John Bapst. The 6-4 senior forward connected on 67 percent of his field goal tries, averaging 24.5 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Clark made the Blue Devils click with his guard play. The 6-2 senior averaged 16.7 points, but showed his all-around talent by providing 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals per tourney outing.

Hudson earned the voters’ support with his well-rounded play. Sumner’s 6-foot senior swingman hit from outside and maneuvered his way into the paint while averaging 23 points and 9 rebounds.

Mattson left a lasting impression with his play for GSA. The 6-2 senior swingman poured in 28 points and had 10 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals in a quarterfinal loss to WA.

Baker put himself in the tourney record books with his 46-point semifinal effort. The 6-3 senior center averaged 28 points and 16 rebounds, while shooting 62 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the foul line.

Mathers averaged 15 points for the EM champion Warriors, including several clutch hoops. The 6-2 senior forward also provided steady rebounding and defense for Southern Aroostook.

Cronkite was the epitome of a small forward. The 5-8 senior dazzled opponents with his ability to drive to the basket or hit the pull-up jumper while averaging 24 points in two games.

Burpee was “Mr. Steady” for Southern Aroostook. The 6-foot senior forward averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds, shooting 70 percent from the floor (14-for-20) in the tournament.

Schoppee sparked the Machias offense, contributing 17.5 points per game with his outside touch. The 6-1 junior guard also provided big rebounds and assists.
