I read in the Bangor Daily News that the House of Representatives spent time recently adopting a measure calling on people to display the flag. This is a horrible waste of time and money.

Displaying the flag is a matter of personal feelings. It is in the same order as religion and/or someone’s personal political views. It is atrocious for the House to even suggest that people display the flag. The flag is not my idea of patriotism. I live my patriotism in my everyday life and in letting others live theirs.

My first thought was, “Next it will be a law that people have to display the flag. Where will our First Amendment rights be then?”

It seems in all of this patriotic fervor, we are losing sight of what our country is really about. Sarah McVeigh Winterport
