Pamela K. Tozier is a registered nurse who specialized in labor and delivery nursing at Maine Medical Center for more than 11 years and has taught childbirth classes to more than 1,000 expectant mothers.

Wishing to share that experience with pregnant women and their families, the mother of three has written, “The Birthing Marathon: An Educational Approach to Labor and Delivery,” published by Harpswell Press. Obstetricians and gynecologists are calling the book a valuable resource tool.

“It is the first honestly compiled piece of modern information on hospital birthing experiences today,” writes Dr. Harry W. Bennert Jr. of Portland.

Dr. Joseph L. Benoit of Bangor believes childbirth “is a wonderful experience that becomes awe-inspiring as one’s knowledge of it increases. This book will enhance the childbirth experience for all couples who read it.”

The 110-page illustrated book, which is softbound, includes instructions on breathing and relaxation techniques, nutrition, diagnostic tests, fetal monitoring, Caesarean section and breast-feeding, all written in the careful but easy prose of a woman who knows her subject.

“The Birthing Marathon,” with an introduction by Olympic gold medalist, and mother, Joan Benoit Samuelson, is available from the author at 185 Mountain Road, Falmouth 04105. The price is $9.95 plus $2 for postage and handling.
