Palermo voters choose town clerk for 43rd consecutive term of office

PALERMO — In what was a relatively brief town meeting Saturday, voters re-elected Virginia Dow to a 43rd consecutive term as town clerk.

Dow, who has handled town affairs since 1948, said Monday that she liked her work too much to consider stepping down.

“I keep saying I’m not going to run again but we have such a good time in the town office. We don’t squabble and everything is great,” Dow said. “I just enjoy being with people, I guess.”

While Dow won easily, the race for a three-year term on the board of selectmen was much closer. When the votes were tallied, David Parkman squeaked out a four-vote victory over Joseph Carey. The final tally was Parkman, 93, Carey, 89.

In the race for a three year seat on the school board Millard Howard had a much easier time, besting Harold Seifken by a vote of 124 to 56.

Dow said the meeting lasted a little more than two hours and was highlighted by a “wonderfull dinner” prepared by the Branch Mills Grange.

“People like to socialize at town meeting and it was a good day for it,” Dow said.

The following pending requests rejected by the voters: Northeast Combat, $50; WCCSA Transportation Program, $636; WCCSA Commodities Program, $33; Skyward, $100; WCCSA Energy Crisis Intervention, $23; WCCSA Heating Program, $24; and Diocesan Human Relations, $116. The town voted to provide $300 for Palermo Senior Citizens Group and $403 for the Central Maine Agency on Aging.

Major spending items approved by the voters were: town officers, $17,000; town charges, $6,000; town office, $1,800; legal fees, $600; street lights, $1,000; fire department, $10,000; Windsor Ambulance, $2,685; snow removal, $50,000; salt shed reserve, $10,000; road paving, $40,000; road improvement, $20,000; and solid waste, $17,500.
