WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Maine baseball team blasted six home runs en route to a 13-12 victory over host George Washington University here Friday.

The win upped the Black Bears’ mark to 11-9.

Maine center fielder Mark Sweeney hit his fifth and sixth homers of the season to lead the 16-hit offensive attack. Shanan Knox and Tim Scott hit their first homers of the season, Gary Taylor belted his sixth, and Paul Kelliher hit his second.

Maine broke a 12-all tie in the top of the ninth inning when Shawn Tobin tripled to scored Sweeney from first base. Sweeney’s run tied him for the school record for runs scored in a career with 184.

Maine’s Rob Higgins (3-0) relieved Mike D’Andrea in the bottom of the fourth and finished the game for his third win of the season. Leading hitters were Tobin with a triple, double and single; Taylor had a double and home run; Knox, Sweeney, and Kelliher each added singles to go with their homers. Gabe Duross singled twice.

For the 13-10-1 George Washington Colonials, Mike Welch and Greg Orlosky each hit a home run and two singles. Allen Browning also belted a homer.

Maine plays a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday against George Washington. On Sunday, Maine again takes on the Colonials at noon in a single game.
