Two missing snowmobilers found

EUSTIS — Two men were found Monday after spending two days in the woods when one of their snowmobiles broke down and the second one ran out of gas, a state official said.

Jody Diaz, 22, and Eric Schwink, 21, both of Jay, were staying at a camp along Route 27 in Eustis when they went for a ride Saturday afternoon, said Paul Fournier, spokesman for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The men were headed for Grand Falls on the Dead River when one of the snowmobiles broke down near Flagstaff Lake, Fournier said.

They continued on the second snowmobile but got lost when the Saturday night snowstorm rolled in, he said. They built a fire and camped overnight, Fournier said.

On Sunday, Diaz and Schwink started out again, but the second snowmobile ran out of gas, he said. They broke into a camp on Jim Eaton Hill near Flagstaff Lake and then started out Monday morning, he added.

At the same time, Fournier said, state officials received a report they were missing and began searching for them with two airplanes.

A game warden found them Monday and led them out to Route 27, Fournier said. They didn’t appear to have any injuries, he added.
