Black Bears sweep Minutemen

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Maine baseball team, which had lost 11 of its last 15 games, broke out of its slump by sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Minutemen here Friday.

The Black Bears won the first game 9-4 and took the second game 9-6.

Maine senior captain Mark Sweeney belted his 37th career home run in the first inning of the first game, breaking the University of Maine career homer record of 36, set by Billy Reynolds in 1986. The two-run homer was Sweeney’s eighth of the season.

Gary Taylor also hit a two-run shot in the same inning to give the 15-13 Black Bears an early 4-0 lead. Maine struck again in the third inning as Sweeney scored on an error and Paul Kelliher connected for a two-run double.

Starter Ed Therrien spread out 10 hits over six innings, striking out four and walking five, to ear the win and improve his record to 3-1.

Sweeney also singled twice for the Bears, while Tim Scott contributed a double and a single and Gabe Duross two singles.

For the Minutemen, Brian Bright went 3-for-3, including a solo homer in the third inning. Justin Howard belted an RBI triple in the third and added a single. Mike Tobin singled, doubled and knocked in a run for 6-13-1 Massachusetts.

Greg King was the key for the Black Bears in the second game, knocking in three runs, including two on a two-out double with the game tied 6-6 in the fifith inning.

Reliever Chuck Nadeau, who had been struggling of late, hurled 1 2/3 innings of no-hit, scoreless ball to notch the win. Nadeau, who evened his record at 1-1, had pitched one no-hit inning to preserve the victory in the first game. For the Minutemen, Justin HOward homered to knock in three runs in the second inning and had an RBI singled in the fourth.
